Are you a wee bit surprised to see a journal page here? I’m surprised myself, surprised but pleased. I really enjoyed dreaming it up and making it. It didn’t end up looking as I imagined but that is the way with journal pages is it not?
This art journal is a Fabriano journal; the paper is nice and thick but not watercolour paper so I painted over it with absorbent ground first. Then I grabbed a bunch of stamps from Darkroom Door along with three light coloured oxide inks and stamped mesh, stone and woodgrain texture stamps over the background. I spritzed it with water to soften the edges of the stamped images and dabbed some out too to make it subtler. Even after adding some water it was still bolder than I wanted so I painted another thin layer of absorbent ground over it.
I filled the bottom of the page with repeat stampings of flowers from the Darkroom Door ‘tall flowers‘ set in distress inks then blended some of the big flowers with water. They don’t blend as well as they do on watercolour paper but the effect is still nice.
I added grass and flowers from the DD ‘ nature walk‘ set, also in distress ink then a border with the mesh texture stamp in black soot oxide ink. It was a bit bolder than I wanted so I spritzed then dabbed with a paper towel ( as you can see I’m a fan of the ‘spritz and dab’ ). I splattered wild honey, forest moss and dusty concord diluted ink over the whole spread and it ended up looking like confetti. To boost a few of the flowers I outlined them with fine tipped black markers.
I wrote psalm 18:36 with a brush pen leaving a space to stamp the word ‘steps’ with the DD alphabet medley stamps. I find choosing words for a journal page tricky, which words and how to add them. But the beauty of a journal page is the experimental nature of it. If I don’t like something on this page, I’ll try something different on another. Once the ink had dried I sealed the large flowers and the lettering with distress micro glaze.

I’m hoping to create in my journals more often and will share pages here if possible. Even if you are not an art journal person the designs can usually be converted to a card and sometimes start out as cards anyway!

I know what you are thinking. What could have inspired me to create a sparkly pink and purple birthday card? A sweet five year old girl! She loves texture so I am hoping the raised glitter embossing, surprisingly silky sparkle ribbon and the raised sentiment will also appeal.
I used a beautiful quarter circle stencil by Alexandra Renke which I am looking forward to using on future projects. I blended four colours of distress oxide inks on neenah solar white cardstock first as I wanted to add the glittery embossing powder over the top. I made sure the ink was totally dry and also used a powder tool before pressing versamark ink through the stencil onto the panel. The embossing powder is WOW fairy dust which is very silvery and sparkly despite what my photos show.
I wrapped the panel with a bit of silky smooth glitter ribbon brought home from France by my partner in craft, embossed the MFT sentiment in silver powder and popped it up over the ribbon. All the product names are linked below. I realize this may not seem like a little girl card, after all there are no princesses, unicorns or cute animals. Since my children became grownups I haven’t really made many child cards. Do you make cards for children? What sets them apart from your other cards?

I posted some cards a couple of weeks back made with stencils from My Favorite Things. Here is another using the geometric stars stencil. I sponged oxide inks through the stencil onto neenah solar white cardstock (colours listed below). For a bit of shimmer I spritzed the panel with my blue pearl-ex mix (made by mixing ‘interference blue’ pearl-ex with water).
I matted with purple cardstock and die-cut 4x h, a, p, p, y using the ‘little lower case letters also from MFT. I stamped some words from the MFT Yay for you set to complete my enthusiastic sentiment.

I have new MFT stencils and oxide inks in the house, a good combination for sure as the oxide inks blend so very nicely. The stencils are the focus on today’s cards but I’m sure I’ll have them providing subtle backgrounds on cards in the future. I’m over on the Foiled Fox blog today talking about these cards and my choices for each one. The first card features MFT ‘geometric stars’ stencil. The next two cards are made with the MFT ‘Moroccan mosaic’ stencil.
I used mini ink blending tools and Neenah solar white cardstock to create all the cards.
I have some of the new oxide colours so I was keen to try them out. Above are all new stormy sky, spun sugar and dusty concord. (Ahh stormy sky, you are so perfect)
I paired the new crushed olive with the older forest moss. (There is also some antique linen in the middle there but it’s covered up by the HAPPY!) I had fun mixing and matching with some MFT sentiment sets to create all my messages and I love the way the stencilling underneath affects the stamping over the top.
For my final card it was again new oxides, tumbled glass and crushed olive. If you have never blended with oxide inks, you probably should; it’s very satisfying.
I was happy with these colour combos; I’d love to hear which oxides you like to put together.

I have a new glass mat on my work table and it’s been fun trying some of my favourite techniques on the glass surface. To create the backgrounds for these two cards I swiped distress oxide inks on the glass, spritzed some water over the ink then swiped hot pressed watercolour paper through it.
For this card the oxide inks were wild honey and lucky clover. I topped the panel with the scrolls half edger die cut and a stacked sentiment. I backed the white cardstock with adhesive sheet first before cutting to make it easier to attach.
The second background was made by swiping watercolour paper through wild honey, lucky clover and abandoned coral oxide inks then splattering some more ink and water over the top.
This one I decorated with the ‘floral half’ die cut edger. Both decorative dies cut all the intricate detail on one side and leave the opposite edge uncut
The cutterpillar glass mat worked beautifully for smooshing ink onto. I managed to spill half a bottle of glue on it while putting these cards together and ended up leaving it to dry for a day or two then peeled it off with ease. I have linked to the glass mat below so you can take a look (in the photo it is shown on top of the Cutterpillar Glow light pad). I really like the size as I can complete inky-painty projects on it but it doesn’t take over my whole work table. I will share more about it as I put it through its paces with other techniques.
Happy Australia Day! What better to feature on the blog than a card made with Australia’s own Darkroom Door designs. The fact is though, by the time I get out of bed on Australia Day the festivities over there are practically over. I am currently sixteen hours behind my family on the east coast of NSW!
I’ve been pairing stencils with a few different things lately. For today’s card I sponged through the Darkroom Door stencil, wildflowers, with black soot distress oxide ink. You can see the watermarks on the stenciled flowers, a chalky white effect particularly obvious with the oxide inks. But before I did that I began by sprinkling brusho over a panel of watercolour paper. I spritzed with water and let the patterns happen. Once that was dry I sponged the black soot oxide through the stencil then splattered some droplets of water on top. I dabbed them up fairly quickly to create the watermarks.
I cut a black mat to be a very narrow frame around the panel and added a black sentiment from the Darkroom Door Happy Birthday set.

I taught a class a while ago where we created distress oxide backgrounds similar to this one. I began with a piece of hot pressed watercolour paper, swiped my salty ocean and fossilized amber distress oxide inks across the panel then spritzed it generously while holding the paper upright which enabled the ink to run down towards the bottom of the panel. I held it the opposite way so the lighter colour ran back into the darker. I kept doing this until I had a fully covered, blended background.
It’s hard to see in the photo but I spritzed with pearl-ex spray which created a sparkly sheen over everything. (I create my own pearl-ex spray by adding less than ¼tsp pearl-ex powder to a small spritzer full of water) Once the panel was dry I splattered some more spray over the background and dabbed it off with a paper towel to created the patchy light and dark effect.
I stamped the Queen Anne’s lace stamps from the Penny Black Flower Sparks set in fossilized amber, salty ocean and black soot distress oxide inks. To finish I attached to a white card base and added a white on black embossed sentiment. This peaceful wilderness path is a scenic stamp from Darkroom Door. I’ve used it in three different ways to create some seasonal backgrounds. For the card above I created an alcohol ink background on yupo in the blues and greens of summer. I stamped the path stamp over the alcohol ink panel in stazon jet black ink. I hand wrote the little sentiment with a fine micron pen.
To create my golden fall scene I used distress oxide inks on glossy photo paper. I pressed the orange and yellow inks onto a craft mat, spritzed them and swiped my photo paper panel through the ink. Most of the colour soaked into the paper immediately but I set it aside to dry for a while and found there was a chalky residue that stayed on top. I wiped that off and was left with a background to which I stamped over with stazon jet black ink.
My chilly winter scene was created using brusho powders on a craft mat. I sprinkled some blue and purple on the mat, spritzed it then swiped some photo paper through the colour. The first print is usually quite intense so I think the one below must have been a second impression.
