I think brusho paints are the perfect medium for autumn leaves. The variation in colour from even one little tub of brusho reminds me of the beautiful variation in autumn leaves. Brusho can be blended for smooth transitions from light to dark or left unblended which ends up looking like the blemishes found on many leaves. When deciding how to paint the new leaf stamp, Poetic, I knew brusho would help me achieve the look I wanted.
I started by stamping the leaf three times on hot pressed watercolour paper in Morocco memento ink. I overlapped the leaves but without re-inking the stamp so I ended up with one dark leaf (foreground) and two paler leaves as my guides for painting. I painted the leaves from left to right adding one colour of brusho to one leaf at a time. I sprinkled dark brown on the first leaf and used a waterbrush to blend it out to the edges of the leaf keeping some areas variegated. I dried the leaf completely before starting on the second one with terracotta brusho and following the same process. Again I dried the panel completely before doing the final leaf in sandstone.
After I had painted all the leaves I sprinkled a little of each colour of brusho over the corresponding leaf and spritzed with water from above. The result was some extra texture on the leaves and some colourful splatter over the edges. To add realism I used a fine brush to paint some veins on the leaves. Finally I created a stacked die cut of the word Grateful and matted in dark brown and the same rust as for the die cut.

Playful Emboss Resist

I’m still playing with the emboss resist technique, hoping to inspire you to get involved in the Simply Irresistible challenge the Foiled Fox and I have happening right now.
The three cards I’m sharing today were made from panels left over after teaching a class a few months ago. I used gansai tambi paints on the top card and the middle card. On the top card I added gold shimmer to both the flowers and the petals with some Ken Oliver liquid metal.
On the card below I used brusho paints, a red and a green, sprinkled over the embossed panel then activated carefully with water. In places the green and red blended creating some brown/orange tones.
I hope there are a few ideas here that might inspire you to do some emboss resist card making then link it up on The Foiled Fox blog.

Turquoise birthday

I am back with the same stamp featured in my previous post, ‘Felicity’ from Penny Black. I wanted to show you another look incorporating the emboss resist technique. I embossed the stamp in white powder on hot pressed watercolour paper then chose turquoise brusho powder to add the colour over the top. I sprinkled brusho then spritzed water and tilted my panel to get the colour to move. I alternated between sprinkling and spritzing until there was enough colour on the panel then used a paint brush to fill the large surrounding areas with turquoise paint. I love the way some spaces captured deep colour and others remained almost white. That is the beauty of combining the emboss resist technique with brusho.
To finish off this card I added a sentiment die cut from foam then coloured it with clear wink of stella to make it sparkle.

Brusho Balloons

I have another card that utilises brusho experiments. If you have delved into the magic of brusho you probably have a pile of pretty brusho panels you don’t know quite what to do with. Experimenting with brusho is a bit addictive so it is rather easy to keep trying colour combinations with no project goal in mind. I decided to put a scrap of green, blue and purple brusho ‘mosaic’ to use as balloons. By brusho mosaic I mean the effect I get when I spritz over the sprinkled brusho only enough to activate it but not send it flowing all over the paper.
I used the ‘uplifting’ dies from Penny Black to cut out five balloons then added adhesive backed foam to each one. I cut circles of circles out of a panel of neenah solar white cardstock to create a background panel then cut circles from a piece of foam to position behind the panel so shadows would show inside the circles. The circles of circles are part of a new PB die set ‘stencil cut’.
I tied a linen thread to each balloon and tucked the other ends under the background panel. The thread tying took me close to my fiddliness factor limit but I persevered and assembled the layers and added a sentiment. This happy card would work for any celebration so I am adding it to the Casology challenge this week ‘Commencement’.

I’ve been wanting to make a feather card for ages and finally got round to it for today’s guest post on the Foiled Fox blog. I have told you before, but just in case you’re new here, I want you to know what a delightful place The Foiled Fox blog and store is. The blog features all sorts of lovely projects and the online store is full of fabulous art and craft supplies and they are always adding new products.
To create my feather card I worked on hot pressed watercolour paper and did all the painting and stamping before any of the die-cutting. I splattered masking fluid over the panel first then sprinkled three colours of brusho, spritzed that and watched it react and spread over the panel. I wanted the violet to blend into the blue, then the blue into the green so I tilted the panel and let the wet paint move. Once the panel dried I stamped the Penny Black ‘skyward’ stamp in black versafine ink.
The background is also stamped with the skyward stamp and embossed in clear powder to create a subtle pattern. I popped the feathers up on the background panel, added some co-ordinating sequins and a little embossed sentiment.

Felicity

Today’s card looks like it was created with a background stamp, which is practically the case, but not quite. I used the new slapstick cling stamp, ‘Felicity’ and stamped it twice to more than fill a card front. The stamp is actually longer than my average card but a bit narrower. The organic arrangement of the flowers made it easy to stamp it twice and make it look like one big image. I stamped in versamark ink then embossed in silver powder on hot pressed watercolour paper. I taped it down then spritzed all over the panel with water. It wasn’t soaking wet but it was wet enough that the brusho I sprinkled on next started reacting straight away. I picked up some more brusho colours the other day to expand my collection and three out of four on this card are new to me. I sprinkled orange, sandstone and rose red over the flowers, spritzed again, tilted the panel to move the water and waited to see if I needed more. I did this a few times then switched over to sprinkling the olive green brusho over the rest of the panel. The olive green was more intense and the leaves on the panel are small so some areas got very dark, very quickly. I used a folded paper towel to remove liquid and colour where there was too much. I also tilted the panel so colour would flow down towards the closest embossed barrier which makes for nice dark contrasting areas next to some of the silver embossing.
I let the panel dry naturally then trimmed it and matted with orange cardstock. I cut a curved banner from the new set ‘birds & banners‘ and embossed one of the co-ordinating stamps from the ‘banner sentiments‘ set in silver. The die cut banner looks folded so I used a marker to add a little shadow to the areas which appear to be behind the main section. I cut the same banner from orange fun foam so I could pop my sentiment up on the floral panel.
When I looked up the name of this new stamp, I was delighted to see it is called ‘Felicity’. I have a dear cousin called Felicity who I haven’t seen in many long years but I have fond memories of. I am going to try hard to actually send a ‘felicity’ stamped card to her, maybe this one.

Pop out roses

I’m a guest over at The Foiled Fox today sharing these die cut roses. This really was an easy card to make because the ‘pop out rose‘ die creates the lovely petals and brusho powders create the pretty colours. I used three different red brusho powders on watercolour paper and some leaf green brusho for the leaves. While the paper was still damp I sprinkled some salt over the panel to get subtle patterns.
The partial cuts in the roses make it possible to lift petals so I folded some up and kept others glued down when I attached the roses to the background panel. To make the background panel I stamped the ‘script’ stamp from Penny Black on cold pressed watercolour paper in tea dye distress ink then painted over the top with water. The result is a softly blurred background with splatters of ink to add to the aged look. Pop over to the Foiled Fox blog for more details and to see the products I have used on this card.

I have a few more cards made with matelasse style backgrounds topped with bright brusho elements. I once again chose intricate dies for the backgrounds. In the cards above and below I embossed watercolour paper with the no two are alike die. For focal elements I die-cut the city skyline, some snowflakes and a couple of words from a panel painted with turquoise and cobalt blue brusho.
The background below was embossed with the bird flower doily then matted with the same painted paper I die cut the dove from. All the dies I used for these three cards are listed and linked below.
I used my big shot/big kick to emboss these panels and my ‘sandwich’ was:
