Sunflower Library Card

I remember when all the library books had cards tucked into a pocket inside the back cover. I don’t remember any of the library cards being particularly pretty though! I am enjoying using the library card stamp and the notebook page also from the set “Life’s Journals”
I created my library card with distress stains, first inking the stamp then spritzing and stamping it on watercolour paper. I used a waterbrush to blend the colours and add any extra colour including blue for the background. I stamped the library card image when the paper was almost dry. The olive notepad page behind was die cut in two steps. Because I wanted the notepad to be wide enough to almost fill the card base I ran the die through the Big Kick half-way then repositioned the die by lining up the little circles at the top and ran it through again. The library card and label are popped up over a piece of faux burlap ribbon.
I haven’t stamped anything inside the card yet but the “For the Record” stamp leaves me plenty of possibilities…

Vintage Birthday

This is one of those designs that grew out of a vague idea not a definite plan. The popped up panel is watercolour paper which I taped down to my work surface. I spritzed water onto it before I stamped. I inked the stamp from “Delicate Florals” with Memento Dandelion, Tangelo and Olive Grove markers then spritzed generously before stamping. I restamped without re-inking a couple of times. Next I inked just the flower heads with the markers and stamped them a couple of times. Finally I stamped a little extra foliage. To highlight the flowers a little more I added more colour with the Potter’s Clay marker and the Venetian red watercolour pencil. The background colour is a combination of watercolour pencil splatter and Memento ink mixed with water. While the panel was still taped down I ran an olive watercolour pencil around the edge of the tape then blended it into the panel with a waterbrush. I added a little extra texture and pattern with the text stamp from the new “Footnotes” transparent set. Once I removed the tape the panel reminded me a little of old postcards so I chose the sentiment from “Sentimental set” because of the vintage style font.

The new Pocket Treasures release from Penny Black inspired me to do something I haven’t done in years; I created a scrapbook page! I designed my page around one of my daughter’s prom photos. As the dress was finished the day before prom I still had all the fabric scraps lying around so I incorporated some of them into the page along with watercolouring, die cuts, stenciling and stamping. I used three new background panels from the Pocket Treasures release, text and music from “Footnotes” as well as canvas from “Textures”. I also used several intricate circle designs from the transparent set “Dazzlers”. The cute little notebook pages are cut with a die from ” A Pocket Full” set.
The 12 x 12 panel is watercolour paper. I have a large block of hot-pressed paper so I did all the work on the page while it was still attached to the block then peeled it off at the end and trimmed it to size. Three of the roses are die cut from watercolour paper and coloured with gelatos. The two paler roses were painted onto the page through a die cut stencil with gesso; I then added colour with gelatos.
I used two dies from the “Leaves” set, one to die cut leaves out of tulle (the dress had four layers of tulle in the skirt), the other to create a stencil to paint through.

and now for something completely different…
The stamps and dies in the Pocket Treasures release are not just for scrapbooking. I went in a very different direction when using some of the new products on a card. I can hardly bear to keep my soft romantic rosy scrapbook page and my neon grunge style card in the same post they are so contrasting. To create my card I used a brayer to apply blue and pink ink onto white cardstock then cut out a piece with the “By the Numbers” die. I used the same Radiant Neon inks to apply pale blue and pink to a white card base with the brayer. I featured yet another background stamp to add arrows along with canvas in grey ink. I then wiped the grey ink pad along the edges of card base for a distressed look. I stamped arrows from “Let’s Chat” in black and the sentiment from “Remember This” also in black. Finally I cut a speech balloon from “A Pocket Full” set out of brayered pink cardstock and stamped words in black ink.

Music and Blooms

The new Pocket Treasures release from Penny Black features some wonderful new background panels. The music and canvas stamps on this card are two of my favourites. There are several more patterns you can see in tomorrow’s post.
This card is lot busier than my usual creations with none of my usual white space. I stamped the flower panel first on watercolour paper using distress inks. I inked the solid flower stamp from Petal Power and spritzed it with water before stamping to make a very loose blended image. I added some more colour with a waterbrush and continued adding colour with both the solid stamp and the co-ordinating outline stamp until I was happy with the result. I stamped the music over the top. I inked the canvas stamp with distress stain and spritzed it before stamping on the card base and added several large drops of water.
I did a little stamp surgery to create the sentiment. The original stamp from Edge to Edge says “you make my heart smile” but I found that I never used the whole phrase; it was often too big for my designs. So instead of avoiding the stamp I removed the ‘heart’! I also had to change the ‘my’ to ‘me’ which involved cutting off the tail of the ‘y’ and adding a loop with a marker. I don’t often slice up my stamps but I think I might use this one more often now.

Three Trees

When I was strolling past a homewares store in a trendy part of town the other night I saw lampshades featuring tree silhouettes with branches connecting around the cylindrical shade. I don’t have a picture but I did translate the idea into two different cards. The one above features a brayered background which I did in Memento Dandelion and Tangelo first and black trees stamped in Versafine Onyx Black over the top. I drew the borders with a black marker then trimmed the panel.
In the version below I inked the stamp with peeled paint, mustard seed and vintage photo distress stains, spritzed it with water then stamped on watercolour paper. I ran the distress stain along the top and bottom of the panel to create the border and pulled some colour from the trees and border with a waterbrush into the blank spaces to make them less stark.
It was fun to use the same basic layout and concept but change a few things for a different mood and message. The top one seems formal and the one below a little more relaxed.

Nature’s Song

I know there has been very little activity here lately. The season of track meets, soccer tournaments and end of year events is upon us! I created this one a while ago thinking it could squeak by as a masculine card. I know it has flowers in the background but the colour scheme is more about foliage than petals!
I inked the ‘Heathers’ background stamp with Memento Pistachio & Olive Grove inks, spritzed them so they would blend a little then stamped on a white panel. I cut the branch from Olive Grove paper using the ‘Nature’s Song’ die and added a sentiment in Olive Grove ink.

Ten Tulips

The Tulip Festival finishes tomorrow so I am glad I can slip one more tulip card in before the end. I worked on this one latish last night and all did not go according to plan. I stamped the tulips first on watercolour paper and they were fine. It was in the finishing off that I had problems. But I will go back to the beginning and explain my process.
I began by inking just the flower heads in Memento Dandelion and Cantaloupe using markers. I spritzed before stamping them at the top of the panel. I stamped just the tulip heads twice, one set under the other and the third time inked the stems and leaves as well. I was happy with the whole panel even the bit that is now covered by a large sentiment banner. I matted with Olive card stock and decided to attach the three strips of lace; I am still not sure if I like the lace there but I decided to stick with it. The panel is long and thin as you can see so it was difficult to work out where to put a sentiment on a 4.25×5.5 inch card base. I tried a sideways sentiment or a small sentiment beside the lace but neither looked right. Anyway, to make a long story a little shorter I stamped the sentiment on the tulips, messed it up and had to either cover the mess or crop the panel. I decided to cover it with a die cut banner and make a very narrow card so the points of the banner could go over the edge.
“Over the Edge” just happens to be the current challenge at Addicted to CAS and it’s a birthday card featuring May Flowers so I will join in at Seize the Birthday as well.
This morning we were down town having a coffee before church and I snapped these tulips in the sunshine.

Four Tulips

The tulip festival continues in Ottawa and here on my blog. I pulled out all my PB tulip stamps and have them on my desk waiting for inspiration. I can’t promise I will use them all during the festival but I will have a few more for you.
To create this little scene I stamped the tulips from the transparent set Blooming Garden twice in Memento Angel Pink. I then painted the petals with colour from a couple of watercolour pencils (listed below). I inked some of the detail lines on the stamp with a Memento Rose Bud marker and stamped over the painted petals to finish off the flower heads before painting the stems in green. I used the same green to fill in the lower background and a blue watercolour pencil for the sky. I then dabbed some pink watercolour ‘paint’ into both the green and the blue to suggest more tulips in the background.
The taped edge of the panel framed the picture which I popped up on dimensional tape over a strip of ribbon.

Two Tulips

When I set out to make this card I had two things in mind. I wanted tulips to mark the beginning of the Tulip Festival here in Ottawa and I wanted to use the current sketch at CAS(E) this sketch. I did not plan to make it one layer at all; the sketch really looks like at least a two layer to me. I made a stencil in masking paper (removable grocery sticker paper) with the new tulip die from Penny Black. It’s called ‘Dainty’ and I can see myself reaching for it often. I stuck the mask down and painted with a waterbrush picking up colour from watercolour pencils. I did not lay down too much ‘paint’ or water; the card base is not watercolour paper so I didn’t want it to warp or soak through to the back.
My daughter came along at this point and commented on my ‘floating tulip’. It did need grounding; I just hadn’t worked out a method at that point. Anyway, I left it as I had promised to take my daughter shopping for a dress to wear to her Academic Dinner on Thursday. We arrived at the mall at 4:30 clueless that it was going to close at 5:00! First store, second dress, happy girl, thankful mother.
I came back to my card, masked and sponged a frame around it then looked for a suitable sentiment. My plan was to stamp the sentiment in green so it would double as some grass but none of my green inks matched the leaves. I was about to settle for less than the best green when the it occurred to me that a dark blue might work. It did.
And the card just happens to also work for the One Layer Simplicity challenge, Fabulous Flowers.

Golden Blooms

After years of avoiding yellow and orange tones in clothes and fabrics I am really enjoying using their bright warmth in stamping these days. I especially like the combination of yellow, orange and navy. I know leaves are rarely navy but orange and navy are opposite on the colour wheel so they create a contrasting stable colour scheme. I chose three colours to participate in this week’s Less is More challenge and the layout is inspired by the CAS(E) this sketch for the week. I just realized I can link up with our current One Layer Simplicity Challenge also to use flowers on a one layer card.
I cut a curved mask to cover the lower two thirds of the card base then chose three stamps from the transparent set Petal Power. I inked the solid petal stamp with mustard seed distress stain and added spiced marmalade along the petal edges. I then inked the co-ordinating outline stamp with just spiced marmalade on the top edge and stamped over the blooms. I stamped a few leaves in chipped sapphire distress stain and added the sentiment in Memento Paris Dusk.
