I started with a large piece of watercolour paper on which I was stamping all the flowers from the Delicate Florals set and experimenting with ways to colour them. The tulips above were stamped with Memento Angel Pink and Bamboo leaves. I then did the colouring with gelatos. I made a little watercolour paint by colouring with the gelato on a plastic sheet then blending in some water. I also picked up colour directly from the gelato with an aqua painter as well as applying gelato onto the tulip then blending. At this point I had a circle made from two tulips and no plan in place. I cut it into a square, masked the tulip flowers and added the letter background. I think it was about this point that I tipped over the bamboo leaves ink pad onto the panel creating some of those random lines you see on the right hand side. (It was also around then that I knocked tomorrow’s OLW card over onto an inked stamp and ruined it but that’s another story.)
So after dragging the edge of the ink pad over the panel a few times to add more vintagy effects I decided to add a little corner of Divine Pattern and a whole lot of pink sponging. Almost happy by this time I settled on one more element: one corner of the frame stamp. The panel was a square but I decided not to make a square card; instead I sliced it up and laid it out on a 5½” x 4¼” cardbase. Even after spacing it out there was still empty space which didn’t look quite right so I created the oval tab, slipped it under the last panel and decided to make a smaller card with the tab sticking out.
Thanks for dropping by; I will be back tomorrow with hopefully my fourth and final attempt at this week’s One Layer Wednesday challenge card.

Dies Days 5: Dragonfly silhouettes
Posted: July 12, 2013 Filed under: CAS, Flutters, Glory of Modesty, Maidenhairs 16 CommentsThe inspiration for this panel was a vibrant tag made by Glenda Waterworth. I sponged the background in pinks, blues and yellow then stamped the glory of modesty background stamp in yellow over the sponging. The silhouetted leaves are stamped in versafine onyx black and the dragonflies die cut and attached with adhesive. This card is for my daughter who is turning 17 tomorrow and just left to compete in a track meet in Quebec. I wish I had thought enough ahead to pop it in her bag! We are heading up to watch her run tomorrow so we can deliver it in person. I hope you have enjoyed the Creative Die posts this week. If you are looking for more inspiration check out the Penny Black blog and Jill’s Inspired By blog which have been featuring the dies all week also.

Posted: July 11, 2013 Filed under: Background Stamps, CAS, Dies, Leaves, Penny Black 12 CommentsI am having a great time with the new dies from Penny Black and one of the reasons is that I can make masks from them. I am using them with cardstock but you know me, I love to mask and sponge and every single die can create two different masks: the positive and the negative. For my post today I used the same die from the Leaves set and stuck with the same layout and design elements but varied the colours. I think the top one is my favourite, the one where I sponged through a mask cut from a post it note and stamped with the letter background stamp. (I think my new stamping motto just might be, “when in doubt, use the letter background stamp”)
For the one above I stuck the die cut post-it leaves down and sponged and stamped over them.

Posted: July 10, 2013 Filed under: Background Stamps, CAS, Flutters | Tags: CAS, Faber Castell gelatos, Penny Black stamps 11 CommentsPenny Black released their new Creative Dies recently and are showcasing them everyday this week on the blog. I have been playing around with them so I you will see “Dies Days” here this week too.
To create today’s card I played with two new toys: the Flutters creative die from PB and the Faber Castell gelatos. I coloured and blended the gelatos with water on water colour paper. I wasn’t trying to make a pattern just a pretty blend of blues with a few yellow highlights. After die cutting the butterflies I added the letter background stamp over the top. The most time consuming part of this card was trying to arrange the butterflies; I actually had five that I was fiddling with but I ended up leaving the two big ones out. Maybe they will turn up another day.

Posted: July 9, 2013 Filed under: Bashful, CAS, Dies, Dots, Leaves 8 CommentsMore dies on show today. One of the dies I imagine I will use on all sorts of cards is the ‘dots’ die. I used it two ways on this card, first cutting a dotty mask out of a post-it note and then creating a background from a coloured piece of cardstock. I sponged through the post-it mask in four colours and then used some of the same colours to define the edges of the berry branch die cut and background panel.
Have a great day

Penny Black released their new Creative Dies recently and are showcasing them everyday this week on the blog. I have been playing around with them so I have some “Dies Days” lined up for you this week too.
Today’s card features the Bashful Die in a collage panel. I began by masking a border then stamping a background of text in memento London fog ink. I used two stamps from Love Chapter along with the letter background stamp. I then used the bashful die to cut a mask out of a post-it note and sponged both the negative and the positive image with yellow and orange inks. I used a couple of stamps from the Lace Trim set along the top and bottom edge in memento Paris Dusk, added some sponging and a few feature words from the Love Chapter stamp. To finish I stamped the letter background on a dark blue die cut flower and attached that to the panel before popping it up on the card base.

Tulips and gelatos
Posted: July 5, 2013 Filed under: Blooming Garden, CAS, Watercolour | Tags: CAS, Faber Castell gelatos, Penny Black stamps 13 CommentsI recently bought a set of Faber Castell gelatos so tonight I had a little play with them. I will try describing how I created this little watercolour collection of tulips but I was experimenting a lot so don’t expect a coherent tutorial just yet. I fiddled with gelato on the stamp, then on the cardstock, then some on an acrylic block mixed with water until I was happy with the watercolour effect. To finish I inked up one side of each tulip on the stamp with a marker then restamped. I redrew the stems, which were looking very pale, with the edge of the gelato. This is just the beginning of my adventures with gelatos so when I am able create an effect more than once I will attempt to share what I have learnt. I sponged the panel ever so slightly round the edge with angel pink then popped it up on the card base.
Have a great weekend. My daughter returns from a tour to Cuba with her violin ensemble tomorrow so we are all looking forward to seeing her and hearing about the trip.

Tag to card
Posted: July 3, 2013 Filed under: CAS, Floral Applique 5 CommentsAs I expected one of the tags I posted on Monday has ended up on a card. I picked out the beige and red tag and used the same stamp set and colours to create a card base and panel. There are several flowers in the Floral Applique set so I chose a smallish one to stamp repeatedly around the edge of the card base then a couple to stamp on the corner of the centre panel. I sponged the edges of both base and panel to soften the whole look and bring it in line with the style of the tag.

There is more inspiration for using twine on the Penny Black blog today and a chance to win a whole lot of twine!

PB and the Twinery
Posted: July 1, 2013 Filed under: Floral Applique, Tagged 6 CommentsPenny Black is teaming up with the Twinery this week so the designers have been playing around with pretty strands of colour. As I have the new Creative Dies on hand too I decided to create tags which co-ordinated with three colours of twine. I used the largest stamp from Floral Applique to stamp a pale background on each tag then stamped in a darker colour a smaller image from the same set along with a sentiment from the new transparent set Sentimental. To finish each tag I sponged around the edge added the contrasting tab and threaded through some twine. Visit the Penny Black blog all this week for inspiration from our design team and The Twinery.
I think it is likely that these tags may end up featuring on regular sized cards but that would be a post for another day.
Happy Canada Day everyone!

Butterfly Die
Posted: June 28, 2013 Filed under: CAS, Delicate Wings, Dies, Soft Wings 21 CommentsAfter a week of sneak peaks, Penny Black’s new Creative Dies are now available in the store. What a treat to have all these beautiful dies to which co-ordinate with some of my favourite stamps. I chose the Delicate Wings die to cut a mask out of a post-it so I could sponge a background of blue for the soft wings stamp. I sponged Versamagic chalk inks in three shades of blue then used a stamp positioning tool to add the detailed stamp in Versafine Majestic Blue. I used two post-its as masks so I could sponge a base of colour to stamp my sentiment over.
Visit the Penny Black blog for this week’s sneak peaks and links to the design teams creations using the new dies.
