It’s the poppy pattern stamp’s turn to be featured today. I have a variety of colour schemes but only two mediums. The most subdued version is the one above done with forest moss, worn lipstick and scattered straw distress stains plus a black marker to add definition to the poppy centres once the stains had dried a little. I used a MISTI to add colours one at a time.
The remaining cards were all done with colour burst powders dropped onto water stamping. You lose a lot of definition with this technique but you achieve some gorgeous bold colours and in some cases some magical blending. Above I used phthalo green, lemon yellow and merlot (I think). Below it was probably alizarin crimson.
The bright purple panel below was the one section I saved from the large stamped image. I stamped it with water but when I went to sprinkle violet colorburst powder I got a little more than I bargained for. I let it dry, then chose one section to touch up, trim and turn into a card.

Misti & Bister

My bister experiments continue, this time with the help of the MISTI. I know the Misti is helpful for all sorts of stamping but so far I have used it most frequently for background stamps. The poppy pattern stamp is a lovely stamp but I must admit I had hardly used it before I got the Misti. I used bister powders for both the cards below but used a different order for applying colour, ink and water.
On the panel above I inked the flowers on the stamp with spun sugar distress stain; it is a pale colour so I could see it when it stamped but it didn’t impact the end result very much. After stamping I dropped mahogany bister powders onto the wet flowers. After the first impression I switched to stamping with water, adding a bit more bister here and there until the flowers were well covered. I dropped some black powder in the centre of a few poppies and then inked the leaves with iced spruce distress stain (again a pale colour) and dropped green powder onto the wet leaves and stems. I re-stamped many times to get the effect I wanted always in the same place because the stamp was firmly positioned on the Misti and my watercolour paper panel was held down by both tape and magnets. I let it air dry then brushed off excess bister, added a black sentiment and two co-ordinating mats.
On my second panel I randomly sprinkled yellow and mahogany bister powder onto a dry piece of watercolour paper (once again held firm in the misti). Before I could stamp over the dry powder I managed to brush half of it off with a towel so I had to sprinkle another lot over the panel! I then painted water onto the stamp with a paint brush and stamped over the powder. I had to stamp several times with water before the flowers really took shape. Instead of adding black powder to the centres of the poppies this time I added distress marker to the centres on the stamp then stamped over the top of the colour already there. Again I let it air dry then brushed off some excess powder. For a little added interested I trimmed then die cut the panel so it could reveal a thin strip of the burgandy cardstock underneath. I wanted the sentiment in the same ink colour as the cardstock so I stamped first in versafine satin red then over the top with versafine vintage sepia. (restamping sentiments precisely is another tricky task made easy with the misti)

June is my last month as a member of the Dirty Dozen at Splitcoaststampers. I joined the team in January for my six month term. I have really enjoyed being part of the group and have been stretched by the monthly themes. Some of the themes saw me creating cards I would never have chosen to make otherwise which was a great exercise for me. It was also wonderful to see all the projects created by the rest of the ‘Dirty Girls‘. For the June theme I created a friendship card using the ‘poppy pattern’ background stamp. I turned a left over scrap into the card above.
As you might have gathered I love to ink my stamps with distress stains because the print I get is usually fluid and easy to blend. To stamp the panel above I used the misti and inked the stamp one stain at a time which enable the stains to blend on the paper as each colour was added. I have been enjoying pairing pinks with oranges lately, something I would never do if choosing what to wear, but a combination which I love on paper. I used a pink, a yellow and an orange stain on the flowers, one green for the leaves then added black to the flower centres once the yellow was almost dry. I don’t use my misti all the time but it is so very helpful with large background stamps which I rarely manage to stamp well the first time.

May Arts Creative Collaboration

Penny Black and May Arts have been collaborating all week and today is my turn to show how easy it is to pair ribbons with stamping. I decided to make a few tags but if you are looking for more ideas check out both the Penny Black blog and the May Arts blog for all sorts of creative projects. (Instead of listing the supplies at the end of the post I have linked to them in the descriptions)
On both the tulip tag above and the poppy tag below I stamped Memento inks onto wet watercolour paper causing the colours to bleed and blend. When the paper dried a little I added foreground tulips or in the case of the poppies centre details and a blue distress stain background. As watercolour paper is rarely pure white I dyed the white cotton lace ribbon from May Arts in tea to give it a natural off white colour. The tulip tag features luxurious velvet ribbon from May Arts tied with a bow of crochet trim ribbon . The stamps are Promise Me and Special Wishes.
I used a different crochet trim ribbon to tie the versatile Faux Burlap Wired Ribbon on the poppy tag. I left the wire in the edges of the ribbon at the top of the tag so I could shape wavy edges then cut a little mat for my sentiment out of the burlap. The stamps used are Poppy Pattern and Special Wishes.
To create the Hollyhocks tag below I stamped, coloured the tiny tag and dyed the crochet trim with Victorian Velvet distress stain. I used the Hollyhocks stamp as my main image, a little bit of a sentiment from the Eloquence set on the tiny tag and the Hugs diecut from the Love Expressions set. I cut both the tiny tag and the lower rectangle using dies from the Chat Bubbles set. All large tags were cut using the large tag die from the Tagged set

The card above was made using the “Poppy Parade” stamp and the new poppy die “Field of Dreams”. If you know me you will probably have guessed that this card is features three tiles because my full design didn’t work out! I inked the stamp in green and orange with markers, spritzed it and stamped on damp watercolour paper. It bled a little then I began adding more colour with Memento inks and watercolour pencils. I continued the poppy theme using the diecut ‘Field of Dreams’ as a base for the sentiment.

Poppies feature several times in the new ‘Happy Everything’ collection including in this large background sized brush-stroke stamp. I inked the stamp with markers and stamped it onto watercolour paper then spritzed the paper to encourage the colours to bleed a little. I then created palette of Memento Rhubarb stalk ink by impressing the stamp pad onto an acrylic block. I picked up ink from the palette and painted it on as well as using watercolour pencils to add colour especially to the centres of the flowers. I painted a pale blue background around the flowers. The sentiment is one of eight new die cut sentiments.
