Delicate Blossoms

Today I have a simple design featuring a sweet new stamp called ‘delicate blossoms’. The new release, “Bring on the Happy” is available in the online store today and it is full of gorgeous new stamps, dies and stencils. To create the little panel above I used Memento inks and markers on watercolour paper. I inked the stamp one colour at a time and used a stamp positioning tool to make sure the stamp landed in the same place each time. I stamped the blossoms with love letter and angel pink and added some water to blend the colours. I let the inks bleed a little but kept flowers fairly well defined. The branch was inked with two greens and then I added water and summer sky ink around the image to spread some background colour but avoided the flowers. Finally I drew the flower centres with a marker. I cropped the panel using one of the new ‘stitched edge’ dies and added a green mat and sentiment.

Today I have another card featuring the gorgeous new ‘swirling wings’ die from the Penny Black “Bring on the Happy” release. The panel you see on the card above is the where the inlaid coloured pieces on yesterday’s card came from. I started with a wet piece of watercolour paper and dropped several colours of distress stain onto the paper and let them blend with each other. I also sprayed some pearl-ex spray over the colours to help them blend and give it all a glimmery sheen. When I cut the butterfly I cut from one side, then the other without going all the way to the middle. That way I was able to keep the body of the butterfly attached but lift and curve the wings. I used the cute little ‘smile’ die from the ‘heartfelt set’ to add sentiment. Mounting it on a black card base seemed the perfect way to show off both the colour and the lacy swirls.

Love you tree

One of my favourite things to do with PB creative dies is to cut masks. For today’s card I diecut the ‘tree of love’ from masking paper then stuck it to white card stock and added a hill mask over the base of the trunk. I used three memento inks to sponge a graduated background then flicked colour from matching coloured pencils. I stamped a few hearts from the cute little ‘posted with love’ set then added the sentiment from ‘so very much’. The panel is popped up on a cardbase of the same cardstock.
Thank you for your kind wishes for Andrew’s and my anniversary; I enjoyed reading them while in New York. We had a wonderful time and I will write about it a bit and post some photos soon. I do have a confession to make however. My patient and kind husband has not received his card yet. I did not write in it before we left thinking that I would write in it during the day and give it to him at dinner on the night of our anniversary. What I didn’t count on was the fact that we were always together (not a complaint by the way, just an observation) so I did not get a chance. Later in the day I told him not to read my blog post that day but I was too late; while I was trying on clothes in Anthropologie, he had been catching up on blog posts. So even though we have been home for several days they have been full days and now I am sick in bed. It seems that my “postal disorder” extends even to the cards I don’t have to post!

Warm wishes for a cold winter’s day

These birch trees are my favourite element of the intricate Winter Song stamp so I decided to isolate them for a scene of their own. I inked them with a weathered wood distress marker and left the rest of the stamp uninked. Weathered wood is a pale grey which is perfect for painting and drawing over the top. As usual I stamped on Fabriano hot pressed watercolour paper. The background colour is distress stains painted on with a waterbrush. I defined the edges and markings on the trees with a black marker, painted some grey shading on the trunks then added the sentiment in black. I am fussy about the cardstocks matching so I mounted this panel on a thin burgandy card then made the card base from cold pressed watercolour paper which is the same colour as the panel but adds some texture.

A little bird

Do you recognise this little scene? It is a portion of the large “Winter Song” scenic stamp. I was experimenting with ways to the colour the stamp back when I made this card. I wasn’t happy with the whole panel but cropping it gave me a smaller scene I could work with. Coming up with a layout that worked I’m sure took me as long as the original painting. I tried portrait but really wanted landscape orientation. A partial red mat didn’t overwhelm the panel and the words provide balance and carry the red highlights across the card. It wasn’t until I was searching for a sentiment that I realized that these three word stamps positioned in the right order have built in framing. It only took me about ten practices off the card base to get the positioning right!. I embossed them in clear powder so they have a pretty shine.
I guess I should mention how I coloured the panel. It was weeks ago so I am guessing a bit. I stamped the whole scene in memento summer sky first; you can see it at the base of the panel looking a bit like a shadow. The summer sky ink served as a guide so I could paint the scene with distress stains. I selectively inked the stamp to restamp after the painting, adding brown to the lower branches and black for the birch trees.

Dressember

Today’s post is quite different from my normal posts for two reasons. Firstly, there is a person stamped and coloured on my card; that rarely happens! Secondly, and more importantly, this post is to let you know about a non-stamping challenge I have taken on during the month of December hoping to raise funds for a very important cause. The fact that the girl on the stamp is in a dress is significant. I have joined in “Dressember 2014” which challenges me to wear a dress every day in December. I am aiming to raise awareness and funds for the International Justice Mission which works all over the world to rescue thousands, protect millions and prove that justice for the poor is possible. The heart of Dressember is dignity for all women so I thought I would share it with my readers, all of whom I appreciate for their support and kind comments, their interest in paper crafts and the enjoyment I get from being part of such a great online community.

Perhaps there will be more dress cards during December; I could do with the practice! The one above is my second attempt and I had difficulty knowing how to finish it as a card. You can’t tell in the photo but it is matted in a dark blue/gold paper which does co-ordinate with her dress. I even tried a few sequins but they didn’t make the final cut. The image is stamped in Memento Angel Pink and coloured with water colour pencils.

Pine needles & cones

This panel of pine cones and needles is one of the bits & pieces that was waiting to be turned into something. I made the panel quite a while ago so here is my best guess at how I did it. I splattered some masking fluid on watercolour paper then inked the pine cones with vintage photo distress ink spritzed them with water then stamped them on the panel. I did the same with the pine needles in, surprise, surprise, pine needle distress ink. At this point I may have painted a little tumbled glass stain around the needles and cones as a background. When the panel had partially dried I restamped sections of the pine cone for added definition. I switched to Memento Northern Pine ink to add some darker needles. When all was dry I rubbed off the masking fluid.
I trimmed it a little and matted it with brown and then tried to think of a background that would add interest but not compete with the panel itself. I tried embossing the needles and cones from the “Nature’s Gifts” set on the card base in a pearl powder. The powder is very pretty and I will try it again on another project but it didn’t work for this one. I ended up with no more pattern on the card base that the stripes of repeated sentiments. Keeping it clean and simple qualifies it for the Less is More challenge this week to be ‘Christmassy’.

Inch by Inch 3: Mini Snowscape

A mini snowscape was a must with the Inchie Arts squares so for day 3 I watercoloured a tiny scene using distress inks and memento inks. I used the same techniques I’ve used on previous snowscapes, a punched mask for the moon, a cut mask for the hill side and snowbanks and of course a splatter of masking fluid to create the appearance of falling snow. I have a tutorial showing the process on a larger scale here. When I was creating my masking fluid tutorial recently I splattered quite a few inchies at the same time so I would have a few ready when inspiration struck. The trees on this little scene were stamped in Memento Northern Pine ink which is my first choice for stamping pine trees. I added some Paris Dusk ink to the trees with a marker as they were looking a little flat. The teeny sentiment is a result of stamp surgery performed on a circular stamp from the Hello Winter set. The finished card is 3.5″ square.

Day 2 of my Inchie Arts week features the white 2″ squares. All week you can see Inchie projects on the Penny Black blog and the Inchie Arts blog. There are giveaways too so make sure you visit.
To create today’s project I worked on two squares taped together at the back. While completing my design I was undecided about whether I would mount them on the card with a gap between them or not. In the end I decided to keep them together. I used the new intricate die, ‘Twirl Tree’ to cut a mask from masking paper. I also cut the star using the ‘Tree of Joy’ die. I pressed the sticky masks firmly onto the squares then added a handcut snow bank mask over the bottom of the square which overlapped the tree trunk. I sponged over the masks with memento Summer Sky ink, Salty Ocean distress ink, Chipped Sapphire distress ink and to finish, a very light application of Encore Silver metallic ink.
Before attaching the squares to the card base I punched a little bite out of both sides of the card base with a ½” circle punch and wound dark blue and turquoise machine embroidery thread round and round. I taped it down firmly then popped up the squares over the thread and added a simple sentiment. We had a few centimetres of snow today so all the trees look prettier. I won’t talk about it too much though because I know some of you would rather not think about winter and others of you have a whole lot more than a few centimetres!

‘Tis the season

‘Tis not quite the Christmas season just yet but it is the season to change the clocks back which is what we did on Sunday. That means the sunset came earlier than I am used to and I was able to enjoy it at the end of a run. The light was orange and yellow behind the silhouetted trees and buildings as I ran home and that is what inspired this silhouetted city scape. I was undecided about a sentiment until I read the Less is More and the Splitcoast Clean and Simple challenge for this week, both are about non-traditional Christmas cards. This card is definitely non traditional especially when you peek inside to see the rest of the sentiment along with some black snowflakes. Seriously, who wants black snowflakes? I am not sure they work. What do you think?
I brayered the colour onto Neenah natural white cardstock, first radiant neon electric coral, next memento dandelion and lastly from the other end of the panel summer sky. (There is no summer sky left at the top of the panel as I had to trim it after messing up the sentiment.) I stamped the skyline stamp in black then brayered black to cover the base of the panel. The windows are coloured with a white gel pen and the sentiment stamped in versafine onyx black ink. I gave the panel a thin black mat and popped it up on dimensional squares. Inside the card is the rest of the sentiment trimmed from a new die cut and paired with the Snowdrops die cut.
