Three square layout

Quite some time ago I stamped the spray of round blooms from the Delicate Florals set on water colour paper. I stamped it three times in different colours and with different amounts of water added each time. The panel has been sitting around waiting for further inspiration. I sliced off the green section of the panel yesterday because I was inspired by this card of Sarah’s. I really like the squares lined up on the extreme right and the sideways sentiment. I didn’t cut my squares quite as small as Sarah because I wanted as much of the image as I could fit.
It’s been a while since I stamped the panel but I think it might have gone something like this:
1. paint a green wash on the watercolour paper
2. ink stamp in green and stamp onto the green wash while it is still damp
3. add letter background in grey
4. when dry stamp the branch in grey slightly offset from the green image.

OLW 149 Closet inspiration

This week’s One Layer Wednesday Challenge is to make a card inspired by a piece of clothing in your closet or a piece of clothing pinned on Pinterest. I happen to believe that one can never have too many white blouses; I love white blouses and if they have a bit of lace or embroidery on them all the better! I don’t have a photo of one of mine but here are a couple pinned on my All Dressed Up board on Pinterest.
To create the card above I embossed the lace trim in white on ivory cardstock then sponged a little Versamagic ” Wheat” and Memento ” Angel Pink” over the embossing to highlight it. The sentiment does not show up too well in the photo but it is there on the top right saying “On Your Special Day” which would work for a wedding or bridal shower.

Vintage collage

Once again I hesitate to try and describe the process involved in creating this card because it is a combination of experiments and errors!
I started with a large piece of watercolour paper on which I was stamping all the flowers from the Delicate Florals set and experimenting with ways to colour them. The tulips above were stamped with Memento Angel Pink and Bamboo leaves. I then did the colouring with gelatos. I made a little watercolour paint by colouring with the gelato on a plastic sheet then blending in some water. I also picked up colour directly from the gelato with an aqua painter as well as applying gelato onto the tulip then blending. At this point I had a circle made from two tulips and no plan in place. I cut it into a square, masked the tulip flowers and added the letter background. I think it was about this point that I tipped over the bamboo leaves ink pad onto the panel creating some of those random lines you see on the right hand side. (It was also around then that I knocked tomorrow’s OLW card over onto an inked stamp and ruined it but that’s another story.)
So after dragging the edge of the ink pad over the panel a few times to add more vintagy effects I decided to add a little corner of Divine Pattern and a whole lot of pink sponging. Almost happy by this time I settled on one more element: one corner of the frame stamp. The panel was a square but I decided not to make a square card; instead I sliced it up and laid it out on a 5½” x 4¼” cardbase. Even after spacing it out there was still empty space which didn’t look quite right so I created the oval tab, slipped it under the last panel and decided to make a smaller card with the tab sticking out.

Dies Days 3: Flutters

Penny Black released their new Creative Dies recently and are showcasing them everyday this week on the blog. I have been playing around with them so I you will see “Dies Days” here this week too.
To create today’s card I played with two new toys: the Flutters creative die from PB and the Faber Castell gelatos. I coloured and blended the gelatos with water on water colour paper. I wasn’t trying to make a pattern just a pretty blend of blues with a few yellow highlights. After die cutting the butterflies I added the letter background stamp over the top. The most time consuming part of this card was trying to arrange the butterflies; I actually had five that I was fiddling with but I ended up leaving the two big ones out. Maybe they will turn up another day.

Tulips and gelatos

I recently bought a set of Faber Castell gelatos so tonight I had a little play with them. I will try describing how I created this little watercolour collection of tulips but I was experimenting a lot so don’t expect a coherent tutorial just yet. I fiddled with gelato on the stamp, then on the cardstock, then some on an acrylic block mixed with water until I was happy with the watercolour effect. To finish I inked up one side of each tulip on the stamp with a marker then restamped. I redrew the stems, which were looking very pale, with the edge of the gelato. This is just the beginning of my adventures with gelatos so when I am able create an effect more than once I will attempt to share what I have learnt. I sponged the panel ever so slightly round the edge with angel pink then popped it up on the card base.

Early light

Now that I am back from my trip to DC and half way through the piles of washing I found a little time to create a card. I have some great design team tasks to tackle and new class projects to design for August but before I dive into them I played around with a new toy. I know it doesn’t look like anything new here but I cut my mask with one of my new spellbinders square dies. Creating a mask with a die is that little bit easier than lining up the four post-it notes. (not a ground breaking technique, I know!)
With my mask in place I sponged Memento pistachio ink on the lower two thirds of the square and summer sky in the top third. Before removing the mask I stamped the grasses across the bottom of the scene. After removing the mask I added the grass and sentiment in olive grove.

My unusual creative process

I visited my Handmade Cards board on Pinterest this afternoon for inspiration. However, the inspiration pic. and my finished card bear absolutely no resemblance to each other. I had a totally different design almost ready to put together when I decided to try and watercolour a background stamp, just in case I wanted a bit more going on in the card. (Unusual for me, I know) As it turned out I liked the background panel so much it became the main event, I tossed the other panel and kept only the little dragonflies from my original design.
So, without mentioning the discarded process, here is how I made this card:
- dampened a piece of watercolour paper, inked the dragonfly stamp in blues and green and stamped it on the damp paper.
- when the dragonflies were dry I cut them out, added a little sponging and used a marker to darken their spines.
- stamped the dragon flies with a versamark pad to totally cover them then embossed with a thick glossy embossing powder, twice.
- to make the background panel, I wet a piece of watercolour paper (much wetter than for the dragonflies).
- I inked the background stamp randomly in the two blues and the green ink and stamped it onto the wet paper.
- when all was dry I trimmed the background panel, sponged the edges and embossed the sentiment.
- attached the background to the card base and the dragonflies with glue dots.
Not what I set out to create, and if I told you I my initial intention was to make a friendship themed card for the Less is More challenge you would just laugh wouldn’t you?

Snowscape glimpse

Sometimes a small snapshot of a scene is all that is necessary to give you the big picture. That’s why I like making stamped landscapes which are either wide and short or narrow and tall; they give you a glimpse of a larger scene.
The challenge at CAS-ual Fridays today is to make a clean and simple thank you card. I need a few thank you cards so I decided to keep it simple and enter the challenge. This card started out as a one layer card masked top and bottom with post-it notes but I stamped a simple “thank you” and got two extra black dots I hadn’t asked for. Not to worry, I sliced the stamped panel out of the card and stuck it on a white card base and proceeded to stamp the sentiment again. This time no dots, but crooked! I peeled off the snowscape panel and re-positioned it over the crooked ‘thank you” then wrote my own. The landscape was stamped in the following order:
- Position top and bottom masks then curved horizon mask
- Stamp trees in Paris dusk over the horizon.
- Re-position curved mask and stamp trees in black, emboss in clear.
- Return curved mask to horizon, add a post-it circle for the moon and sponge the sky in Summer sky and Paris dusk
- Return curved mask to lower hill position and sponge snow bank in Summer sky
- Remove curved mask and sponge lower edge in Paris dusk
My son has gone downhill skiing with a friend today for the first time. He’ll probably love it…
