OLW 155 Silhouettes
Posted: September 2, 2013 Filed under: Birds on wire, CAS, OLW | Tags: CAS, Penny Black stamps, Tsukineko Memento inks 23 CommentsI’m not too late to add a card to Karen’s One Layer Wednesday challenge. I actually have two, neither of which turned out as I imagined but both meet the criteria. I masked both cards with post-it notes leaving a one inch panel each time where I embossed the birds and sponged the sky.
On the card above I sponged over a torn mask repositioning and using different colours each time. On the card below I sponged over a straight edge then repositioned and sponged again several times to represent the sun’s rays.
One night I was sitting watching one of my son’s soccer games and there was quite a noise coming from nearby the field. When I looked to see what it was I saw hundreds of birds perched on electricity wires. It was an astounding sight.
Supplies
Stamps: Birds on a wire, Summer Fun (PB)
Inks: Memento Summer Sky, Dandelion, Cantaloupe, Angel Pink & Versafine Onxy Black(Tsukineko)
Penny Black plays along with Less is More
Posted: August 31, 2013 Filed under: CAS, Floral Applique, Love Chapter 14 CommentsThe Penny Black design team is playing along with the “Less is More” challenge this week which is to ‘use a stamp’ with the added suggestion of using watercolour too.
To use a stamp is not too much if a stretch for the Penny Black designers! I decided to limit my stamped area in keeping with the less is more guidelines. I punched squares out of a post it note to create a three square layout through which I sponged chalk inks. I stamped images from the floral appliqué set in chalk inks also. I had intentionally spaced my squares further apart on the right so I could place the sentiment in between the two squares.
As I was enjoying working with the chalk inks I used the same mask on a portrait oriented card switching the plum ink for a couple of blue inks. The colour scheme reminds me of the beach.
Supplies:
Stamps: Floral Applique, Sentimental, Love Chapter (PB)
Inks: Versamagic Perfect Plumeria & Wheat, Aegean Blue & Night Sky (Tsukineko)
Water Stamped Grasses
Posted: August 29, 2013 Filed under: Aspire, CAS, Watercolour | Tags: CAS, Penny Black stamps, Tsukineko Memento inks 14 CommentsAfter stamping the Queen Anne’s lace with water I tried the technique again with a different stamp. I masked a rectangle then used ink to sponge the background with green, yellow and orange tones. I then painted water onto my stamp and stamped several times along the panel. You can see a clear water stamped impression on the left hand side but the others are less obvious. To finish I inked the same grass stamp in green and orange and stamped it several times before adding the sentiment
The card and the panel are cut from 140lb weight water colour paper.
By the way if you are looking for One Layer Wednesday this week Karen is hosting a Silhouette challenge which I hope to play along with soon.
Supplies:
Stamps: Aspire, Thinking of You (PB)
Inks: Memento Cantaloupe, Tangelo, Pear Tart, Olive Grove (Tsukineko)
Cardstock: Fabriano 25% cotton hot pressed watercolour paper
CAS(E) this sketch 42
Posted: August 24, 2013 Filed under: Background Stamps, CAS, Glory of Modesty | Tags: Penny Black stamps, Tsukineko Memento inks 11 CommentsI am playing along with CAS(E) this sketch#42 this week. I didn’t set out to create a one layer card but managed to follow the sketch fairly closely without adding a layer. I used a technique I have used before and explain in a tutorial here. Before stamping the background stamp on the card base I masked a narrow margin on each edge as well as positioning an oval mask where the sentiment was to be. It took me approximately 325 attempts to get that bow how I wanted it but other than that it was a very straight forward card!
Supplies:
Stamps: Glory of Modesty, Sweet Wishes (PB)
Inks: Memento Pear Tart, Bamboo Leaves (Tsukineko)
Also: Narrow satin ribbon
Mini Journal boards – Autumn & Winter
Posted: August 22, 2013 Filed under: Background Stamps, Floral Applique, Japanese Maple, Leaves, Mixed Media, Tagged 10 CommentsOn Tuesday I posted the spring and summer mini journal boards I made as part of the Penny Black collaboration with Design Memory Craft Faber Castell.

Today I have the autumn and winter boards along with a description of my creative process. Once again I relied heavily on the new creative dies from Penny Black and the gelatos from Faber Castell. I began my autumn board by creating a collage background in red and rust. I used the music background stamp, the Japanese maple stamp and some sponging. The next layers are all die cut using the Leaves dies. Some are cut from Penny Black mix & match fall festival papers; the patterned leaves are cut from a watercolour panel I created using red cherry, tangerine and chocolate gelatos and a stamp from the Floral Applique set.
Supplies:
Stamps: Music Background, Japanese Maple, Floral Applique (PB)
Creative Dies: Leaves (PB)
Gelatos: red cherry, tangerine, chocolate (Faber Castell)
Mini Mixed Media Journal (Faber Castell)
Inks: Potter’s Clay, Rhubarb Stalk (Tsukineko)
Last but not least, the winter board. To create the co-ordinated board and tags I cut a hill mask from two post-it notes at once so the masks were identical. I positioned one mask on the board then layered the tags on another post-it note to hold them together while positioning the second mask across the tags. Before applying any ink I flicked masking fluid onto both the board and the tags then let it dry. To create the night sky I used a combination of gelato and ink blended over the masking fluid. When the sky was complete I repositioned the hill mask on both the board and the tags to create a couple of snow banks by sponging. The berries were die cut from white cardstock then coloured with red and brown inks and the snow was added with a coconut gelato. To finish I removed the masking fluid, popped up the tags and arranged the berries across the top.
Supplies:
Creative Dies: Leaves (PB)
Gelatos: boysenberry, coconut (Faber Castell)
Mini Mixed Media Journal (Faber Castell)
Inks: Memento love letter, rich cocoa, Paris Dusk(Tsukineko)
OLW 154 One-One-One
Posted: August 21, 2013 Filed under: CAS, Dazzling, OLW | Tags: CAS, Penny Black stamps 13 CommentsThis week’s One Layer Wednesday Challenge is to use one image stamp, one ink colour and one sentiment stamp to create your card. We might have done something a little like this before but I think it makes us think about keeping it simple which is one of our aims on this challenge.
I used a single flower stamp but masked a square first to limit how much of the stamp showed. My colour choice was grey which is a little unusual for a flower but I have seen some very striking grey images on cards lately so I thought I would give it a go.
OLW 154 Rules
1. A one-layer card is defined as a single layer of card stock folded in half. No other layers of paper allowed.
2. Make a card using only one image stamp, one colour and one sentiment stamp
3. Post your card somewhere online and link back to it here using the InLinkz button on the sidebar. If linking to a blog post, please be sure to link to the specific post and not your blog’s home page.
4. The most important rule of all…HAVE FUN!
Supplies:
Stamps: Wishes, Dazzling (PB)
Inks: Versafine Smokey Gray(Tsukineko)
Design Memory Craft Collaboration
Posted: August 20, 2013 Filed under: Bashful, Dies, Dots, Floral Applique, Gelatos, Mixed Media, Polka Dot Sprig, Summer Fun, Tagged 10 CommentsThis week Penny Black has teamed up with Faber Castell to create some multimedia projects. You can see projects on the Penny Black blog and the Design Memory Craft blog along with chances to win product prizes.

I decided to follow a seasonal theme featuring the Mini Mixed Media Journal from Design Memory Craft Faber Castell.
I began by creating the spring memory board below:
The first layer of this scene is the background sponging in blue, yellow and green inks. I then added a little texture to the grass with a pistachio gelato. The second layer is sponged flowers created by sponging through a die cut mask made with the Bashful die. Over them I stamped a row of Polka Dot Sprig flowers which I inked with guava, melon and tangerine gelatos then spritzed with water. The next layer includes sponging through a mask die cut with the Dots die and some text stamping using the transparent set Love Chapter. I die cut four flowers with the Bashful die and coloured them by blending guava, melon, tangerine gelatos with my fingers. On a piece of watercolour paper I applied the same gelato colours, blended them with water then added the love chapter script over the top before die-cutting the butterflies using the Tagged die set. The “spring” title is hand drawn.
Supplies:
Stamps: Polka dot sprig, Love Chapter (PB)
Creative Dies: Bashful die, Tagged Dies, Dots (PB)
Gelatos: guava, melon, tangerine, pistachio (Faber Castell)
Mini Mixed Media Journal (Faber Castell)
Inks: Memento Summer Sky, Cantaloupe, Olive Grove, Bamboo leaves & Versamark (Tsukineko)
My second board is the summer one below:
I know summer can be represented many ways but I decided on a bright blue sky, deep red flowers and some celebratory pennants. The flowers were embossed in clear powder, coloured over with a red cherry gelato and a few highlights added with markers. The sky is sponged ink with a little text and a few water droplets. I used the tagged die cut set to make pennants out of PB mix and match cardstock and designer paper, stamped a little message from the summer fun set then attached them with twine over my hand drawn title.
Supplies:
Stamps: Floral Applique, Letter background, Summer Fun(PB)
Creative Dies: Tagged Dies, Dots (PB)
Gelatos: Red Cherry (Faber Castell)
Mini Mixed Media Journal (Faber Castell)
Cardstock: Penny Black Mix & Match papers and Madison Designer paper
Inks: Memento Bahama Blue, Pear Tart & Versamark (Tsukineko)
Thanks for visiting; I’ll be back on Thursday with my winter and autumn mini boards.
Watermarked in blue
Posted: August 14, 2013 Filed under: CAS, Queen Anne's Lace, Watercolour 14 CommentsYou may know blue is a favourite colour of mine as is Queen Anne’s Lace a favourite flower and watercolour a favourite technique. So when I saw this weeks Case this sketch I decided to use all three favourites to complete the challenge.
The panel and the card base are both watercolour paper (details below). I sponged the panel with nautical blue ink then painted the stamp with water and stamped it onto the sponging. The image created by “water stamping” is quite subtle and in the background. I then stamped in nautical blue, once the whole stamp as well as a few partial impressions. The final touches were some water droplets and some ink droplets.
Supplies:
Stamps: Queen Anne’s Lace, Wishes (PB)
Inks: Memento Nautical Blue (Tsukineko)
Cardstock: Fabriano Hot pressed 25%cotton watercolour paper

My top card was made by sponging through a couple of masks cut with the blissful die and three different memento inks (listed below). The popped up tiles on the card below were made using the emboss resist method and the same three inks.
Supplies:
Stamps: Glory of modesty, Every Happiness, Flourish Birthday (PB)
Inks: Memento Angel Pink, Love Letter, Rhubarb Stalk & Versafine Onyx Black (Tsukineko)
Dies: Bashful, Black embossing powder
One stamp three ways
Posted: August 6, 2013 Filed under: Berry Branch, Stamped Landscapes | Tags: Penny Black stamps, Tsukineko Memento inks 17 CommentsI think this berry branch stamp was the first Penny Black stamp I owned. I love the way it comes in from the side with all the twigs, berries and leaves. Sometimes I want to balance a design with a branch facing the other way and, as I don’t have one of those blank rubber stamps for creating a mirror image, I tried something else. I stamped the branch in a mix of teal and green in the upper left hand corner. I re-inked the stamp and stamped it on the plastic imaging sheet I use with my stamp positioner and stamped the sheet onto the card panel. The image is much paler when stamped this way. The third way I stamped the berry branch was by painting water onto it and stamping it onto the sponged colour. This creates a ghostly watery image.
The steep hills were created by sponging over a torn post-it note mask several times. I also flicked some water droplets and green ink droplets around too. The panel is matted with PB Sea Breeze mix & match cardstock with the 1 Corinthians Love chapter text stamped on it.
Supplies:
Stamps: Berry Branch, Love Chapter (PB)
Inks: Memento Teal Zeal, Summer Sky, Cottage Ivy, Northern Pine (Tsukineko)
Cardstock: Sea Breeze mix & match cardstock
