Christmas Reds & Greens

red and green over snow Heather Telford

During these last few days before Christmas I have a few more cards to share. Some of them are similar to others I have already posted so I won’t go into great detail about the making process. Where possible I’ll direct you to any helpful instructions. This card was the precursor to this card: Berries in Snow. This one is a simpler design and the snowbank masks were torn not cut.

Supplies:

Stamps:  Christmas Reds and Greens, Robin’s Wish (PB)
Inks: Memento Pistachio, Summer Sky, Lady Bug & Versamark (Tsukineko)
Cardstock: Penny Black mix & match olive grove paper
Also: Clear Embossing Powder

Merry Christmas with holly

merry holly panel Heather Telford

These two cards are the result of some playing around with distress stains on watercolour paper. For the one above I stamped the holly (in memento ink) and coloured it(with distress stain) first, added the background (distress stain) with a paintbrush and stamped the letter background (memento ink) over everything. For the ornaments below I painted a wash of blue first and stamped the holly and music over the wash. Because the distress stain and the memento ink are both dye inks the colour intensified when I painted green over the blue background. The baubles were cut using the Penny Black die “ornaments.”

I finally sat down yesterday and wrote in 90% of my Christmas cards. I still have a few  to write.  Yes, I know there are only a few days before Christmas Day, but there are twelve days of Christmas aren’t there?

Joy

 Joy Heather Telford

This is the second card I created to play along with the  Through the Purple Haze Challenge Blog where the theme is Christmas.  Just as I did with my Monday card I used only die cuts, masking fluid and ink to make this card, no stamps. It did not start out as a three square layout even though this design is a favourite of mine. It began as a one layer design with a lot of masking fluid and ink involved. Things got a little messy so I decided the best thing to do was to save the best parts of the panel and create a new design. I punched three squares, popped them up and added a die cut sentiment.

Supplies:

Inks:  Memento Rhubarb Stalk (Tsukineko)
Creative Dies: Snowflake trio, Love & Joy
Also: Winsor & Newton Masking Fluid

Peace

 Peace Heather Telford

This week Penny Black is playing along with the Through the Purple Haze Challenge Blog.  The theme is `Christmas`so I pulled out the masking fluid again. Before I added masking fluid I die cut the word Peace and the Nature`s Song branches out of post it notes and stuck them on the card base as masks. I didn`t flick the masking fluid on for this design; I painted it on with a paintbrush. After it dried I sponged Memento Summer Sky ink over the masking getting gradually paler as I moved from right to left.

It`s nice to create a one layer card again, made even simpler by using only one ink and no stamps.

Inks:  Memento Summer Sky(Tsukineko)
Creative Dies: Nature’s SongLove & Joy

Tiny watercolour

Watercoloured snowman Heather Telford

Penny Black has a set of two slapstick cling stamps depicting sweet snowy scenes. One shows a church and decorated tree, the other is above. I used distress stains and  Memento markers to colour this little snow scape after I had embossed it with clear powder. I added water as I coloured, to blend and spread the ink. I think the foreground ink blend makes the snow man  look like he is standing on ice rather than snow. After a storm last night we have plenty of both snow and ice.

You might be interested to know that One Layer Wednesday is currently having a make-over. The team has some exciting new plans we will share when we kick off again in the new year.

Watercoloured baubles

watercolour baubles

The painted panel above was done on one of the scraps of watercolour paper I like to have lying around already covered with  drops of masking fluid. I try to never prepare just one but rather flick the fluid over several pieces of both watercolour paper and white cardstock. That way they will be dry and ready to use whenever I get the chance.

I painted water over the whole panel then inked the stamp from the “Ornately” set with blue and red ink. The ink blurred and bled all over the place immediately but after it had had a chance to dry off just a little I reinked and stamped again in the same place to get the soft edged image.  I added the music background and some sponging around the edges. When all was dry I gently rubbed off the masking fluid , matted with blue and added a sentiment to match.

No baubles up at my place yet, how about you?

Stamps: Ornately, Sentimental, Music Background (PB)
Inks: Memento Love Letter, Danube Blue, Rhubarb Stalk (Tsukineko)

Dragonfly panel

Dragonfly relax

I am back in Canada now. Having not had a chance to do any stamping, I will share another card from my classes earlier this year. This simple one layer card  features that same layout I use over and over. I masked the top and bottom with post-it notes then sponged in pale green and pale blue leaving an area free of colour as a light focal point. I added some foliage stamped in green and a couple of dragonflies stamped in blue. Finally I removed the masks and stamped dragonflies and sentiment in a darker blue.

I may have some wintery designs for you soon, now that I have put away my sandals and shorts and pulled out boots and coat!

Stamps:  Social ButterflyVerdant , Friendship
Inks: Memento Summer Sky, New Sprout, Nautical Blue

Snowflake dies

snowflake dies

The Penny Black blog has continued to showcase the new Christmas dies this week. I have featured two on this card.

The layout  was inspired by a lovely earth toned card by BIrgitta. I blended three blue gelatos with water on a piece of cardstock then cut the snowflakes and word out of it. The diagonal section was first masked with a torn post-it note then stamped with Music background and sponged with Memento Summer sky and Danube Blue.

Thank you for your kind words and your prayers for my family.  My mother was very happy to come home from hospital today and we were very thankful that the home was safe from threat of fire.  I must admit it is a little crazy for me to be posting a snow flake card from a hot dry sunny land. On the other hand I believe Ottawa had its first frost last night so snowflakes might even have fallen by the time I get home!

Supplies:

Stamps: Music Background (PB)
Creative Dies: Snowflake Trio, Love and Joy (PB)
Inks: Memento Summer Sky, Danube Blue (Tsukineko)
Gelatos: three shades of blue

Blue Hillflowers

blue hill flowers

As I mentioned in my last post I am on the other side of the world. I am visiting my parents who live in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. My mother is currently in hospital so I have been spending part of each day visiting her with my father. When not at the hospital we have been preparing for possible evacuation due to the serious bush fires in the area. I have written a bit more and posted some photos on my other blog, Sentient. Thank you to all who have participated in my One Layer Wednesday challenge to use leaves. I have not been able to visit all of your blogs just yet. Things have been a little busy.

The card above is one of my favourites from the classes I taught in Washington last June. I started by embossing the hillflowers stamp in clear embossing  powder onto white cardstock then flicked masking fluid  over the whole panel. I applied the blue ink by sponging from one corner towards the other fading the colour out toward the “light source”. I only used one blue ink and finished the design by flicking some of it over the whole panel. Once all the ink was all dry I rubbed off the masking fluid to reveal the little white flecks.

Supplies:

Stamps: Hill flowers , Eloquence PB)
Inks: Memento Nautical Blue & Versamark (Tsukineko)
Also:  clear embossing powder, Winsor & Newton masking fluid

OLW 162 Leaves

OLW Leaves

As I write this post our backyard is beginning to fill up with leaves. The strange thing is that by the time this post goes live I will be far away from our autumn leaf filled yard in another season and country all together!

Wherever you are and whether you can see golden, red or green leaves the challenge this week is to feature them on your one layer card. I used one of the leaf dies from the Penny Black creative die set Leaves to cut a couple of masks from post it notes. I then sponged over the masks in warm fall colours and added a thankful sentiment.

Supplies:

Stamps: Hot Rod (PB)
Inks: Memento Dandelion, Potter’s Clay, Cantaloupe, Morocco  (Tsukineko)
Dies: Leaves
