No card left behind
Posted: August 29, 2014 Filed under: CAS, No Card Left Behind, Oh Christmas Tree | Tags: CAS, Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer Watercolour pencils, Penny Black stamps, Ranger Distress stains 15 CommentsI recently started using the phrase ‘no card left behind’ at my classes. I know sometimes a card needs to left behind; sometimes a fresh start is best. I’m not talking about those instances; I’m talking about the times when the card is basically working. The colours are pretty, the layout is balanced, the stamping is solid but then something goes wrong. It could be a crooked sentiment or maybe a smudge of ink, perhaps an incomplete imprint from the stamp. In these situations I have adopted the policy of “No Card Left Behind” and I like to make sure it happens in my classes. I like the participants to go home happy with the their cards. I know they might try it again and tweak things or they might decide the design is not for them and never try it again. Either way I like them to go home with the promised cards.
To this end I have a few emergency solutions up my sleeve. I’m sure you have them too. Some of my class participants joke about the butterfly fix: “I can always stamp a butterfly over that” It can work in some situations but not really on a snow scene! I have shared some of my fixes before and have decided to continue in the spirit of “No Card Left Behind” and share some more from time to time. I will try and remember to photograph the problem before I come up with the fix but sometimes I just forge ahead and its too late for ‘before and after photo shoots’.
I have two cards to share today; the second one is the NCLB. I started both with the tree image embossed on watercolour paper with silver powder. I added distress stains to the paper and blended them immediately with water and a paintbrush. For the card above I kept the colour contained in the tree area just letting it bleed out a little by spreading the stain and water with a brush. On the other panel I blended the colour all over the panel so the whole rectangular area was covered in shades of green. I then sprinkled salt on the wet paper and let it dry. The result was a pretty textured background but overall the design was lacking something. I set it aside and finished the above panel with some silver, blue, green and yellow splatter. I added a bit of definition around some of the swirls and the border with watercolour pencils.
Now how about the NCLB card? You can see I ended up punching out stars and arranging them as a tree but it took a bit of fiddling around before I settled on that design. I first punched squares from the watercoloured panel to see if I could come up with a three or four square CAS layout but that wasn’t coming together so I punched as many stars as possible out of the squares and remaining scraps and arranged them in a tree shape. I had a little star punch that framed the star at the top of the tree and cut a little trunk from a scrap. All the shapes are popped up with 3D foam squares from Scrapbook Adhesives on a white panel which is popped up with the thin 3D foam squares. I had a few narrow scraps left so I stamped a simple sentiment and attached it as a tab to the panel. Punches are a good option for saving a card that will no longer work as a whole panel. I often punch squares from a stamped design but circles or fancier shapes like flowers and stars are great to arrange into a new design.
Thanks for wading through this rather long description; have I inspired you to give the occasional mess up a second chance? Do you have strategies for saving your hard work after an annoying slip or smudge?

One Layer Foliage
Posted: August 10, 2014 Filed under: CAS | Tags: Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer Watercolour pencils, Tsukineko Memento inks 10 CommentsYesterday I took time to play along with the new Less is More challenge to make a one layer card based on the theme of foliage. I pulled out my watercolour block and taped a strip of painters tape down the middle of the 9″x12″ page to mask off a portrait oriented card base.
I used a hand-cut stencil a friend gave me to make this card. The cutting is quite intricate around the edge of the leaf; I’m not sure that I would have the patience or steady hand to replicate this design. I sponged three colours onto the panel taking care not to blend them or overdo it with the colour because I wanted the texture of the sponge to show. Usually I sponge until the coverage is uniform but I was after speckle this time. I splattered with three watercolour pencils and a little gold “Wink of Stella” on each leaf also.
Supplies:
Stamps: Flourish Thank You (PB)
Stencil: Hand cut maple leaf
Inks: Memento Rhubarb Stalk, Love Letter, Peanut Brittle (Tsukineko)
Pencils: Albrecht Durer Burnt Ochre 187, Pompeian Red 191, Pale Geranium Lake 121(Faber Castell)
Paper: Fabriano 100% cotton hot pressed watercolour paper
Also: Gold “Wink of Stella” pen
Stenciled with text
Posted: July 28, 2014 Filed under: CAS, Footnotes, Verdant | Tags: CAS, Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer Watercolour pencils, Fabriano Watercolour Paper, Penny Black stamps, Penny Black stencils 14 CommentsI have been experimenting with my stencils trying different techniques and one thing I wanted to do was stamp a pattern through the stencil onto the card underneath. I ended up using some modeling paste first to give me a slightly raised image. I taped the stencil to some watercolour paper first then spread modelling paste over it with a palette knife. I removed the stencil to let the paste dry thoroughly then replaced it before stamping. I used the text stamp from “Footnotes” and did not stick it to an acrylic block first, instead I kept it flexible and pressed it onto each leaf and flower space in the stencil. As I had stamped it with Versafine Majestic Blue I lightly sponged the same ink over the stencil to captures the stems and define the design a little more. The panel was taped to my work surface so I used the edge of the tape as a border adding blue with a watercolour pencil and blending the colour into the panel. I finished it off with just a few little splatters and a small sentiment. The panel is popped up over a grosgrain ribbon.
You can’t see the modeling paste in my photo but the effect on the card is a subtle raised image. I have more experimenting with stencils to share in the days to come. Thanks for dropping by.

Vintage Birthday
Posted: July 26, 2014 Filed under: Delicate Florals, Footnotes | Tags: Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer Watercolour pencils, Fabriano Watercolour Paper, Penny Black stamps, Tsukineko Memento inks 18 CommentsThis is one of those designs that grew out of a vague idea not a definite plan. The popped up panel is watercolour paper which I taped down to my work surface. I spritzed water onto it before I stamped. I inked the stamp from “Delicate Florals” with Memento Dandelion, Tangelo and Olive Grove markers then spritzed generously before stamping. I restamped without re-inking a couple of times. Next I inked just the flower heads with the markers and stamped them a couple of times. Finally I stamped a little extra foliage. To highlight the flowers a little more I added more colour with the Potter’s Clay marker and the Venetian red watercolour pencil. The background colour is a combination of watercolour pencil splatter and Memento ink mixed with water. While the panel was still taped down I ran an olive watercolour pencil around the edge of the tape then blended it into the panel with a waterbrush. I added a little extra texture and pattern with the text stamp from the new “Footnotes” transparent set. Once I removed the tape the panel reminded me a little of old postcards so I chose the sentiment from “Sentimental set” because of the vintage style font.
Supplies:
Stamps: Delicate Florals, Sentimental, Footnotes (PB)
Inks: Memento Dandelion, Tangelo, Potter’s Clay, Olive Grove Markers, Olive Grove & Pistachio ink (Tsukineko)
Pencils: Albrecht Durer Watercolour pencils Olive Green 173, Venetian Red 190 (Faber Castell)
Cardstock: Fabriano 100% cotton hot pressed watercolour paper, Neenah Natural White 110lb cardstock
A Fresh Bunch of Flowers
Posted: July 20, 2014 Filed under: Watercolour | Tags: Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer Watercolour pencils, Fabriano Watercolour Paper, Penny Black creative dies, Penny Black stamps 25 CommentsThis watercolour has been sitting in the block for months; I had forgotten about it until I opened the block to use it for a new project. Some of my watercolour cards involve splashes of colour and loose blending in and outside the stamped lines. This is not one of those but a more controlled watercolour. I stamped the image in Memento Desert Sand ink using a post-it note mask to overlap the flowers. I then worked with watercolour pencils and a waterbrush to fill each flower with graduated colour. I drew stems and leaves to make a bunch, cropped the design, matted it and added a die cut sentiment.
Supplies:
Stamps: To You, (Penny Black)
Creative Dies: Celebrations
Inks: Memento Desert Sand (Tsukineko)
Also: Faber-Castell watercolour pencils dark orange 115, olive green 179, brown ochre 182, raw umber 180 and a water brush
To Treasure

I designed my page around one of my daughter’s prom photos. As the dress was finished the day before prom I still had all the fabric scraps lying around so I incorporated some of them into the page along with watercolouring, die cuts, stenciling and stamping. I used three new background panels from the Pocket Treasures release, text and music from “Footnotes” as well as canvas from “Textures”. I also used several intricate circle designs from the transparent set “Dazzlers”. The cute little notebook pages are cut with a die from ” A Pocket Full” set.
The 12 x 12 panel is watercolour paper. I have a large block of hot-pressed paper so I did all the work on the page while it was still attached to the block then peeled it off at the end and trimmed it to size. Three of the roses are die cut from watercolour paper and coloured with gelatos. The two paler roses were painted onto the page through a die cut stencil with gesso; I then added colour with gelatos.
I used two dies from the “Leaves” set, one to die cut leaves out of tulle (the dress had four layers of tulle in the skirt), the other to create a stencil to paint through.
Supplies:
Stamps: Dazzlers, Footnotes, Life’s Journals, Textures (PB)
Creative Dies: A Pocket Full , Rose, (PB)
Gelatos: Metallic Melon, Green Tea, Guava (Faber Castell)
Watercolour Pencils: Medium Flesh 131, Pompeian Red, Pine Greren 267 (Faber Castell)
Inks: Memento London Fog, Cottage Ivy & Olive Grove Memento markers (Imagine Crafts Tsukineko), Worn Lipstick distress stains and ink (Ranger)
Textural Accents: Gesso, Gel Medium (Faber Castell)
Paper: Fabriano 100% cotton hot pressed watercolour paper, PB Mix & Match Coral Reef Paper
Also: Tulle, Satin, Staple
and now for something completely different…
The stamps and dies in the Pocket Treasures release are not just for scrapbooking. I went in a very different direction when using some of the new products on a card. I can hardly bear to keep my soft romantic rosy scrapbook page and my neon grunge style card in the same post they are so contrasting. To create my card I used a brayer to apply blue and pink ink onto white cardstock then cut out a piece with the “By the Numbers” die. I used the same Radiant Neon inks to apply pale blue and pink to a white card base with the brayer. I featured yet another background stamp to add arrows along with canvas in grey ink. I then wiped the grey ink pad along the edges of card base for a distressed look. I stamped arrows from “Let’s Chat” in black and the sentiment from “Remember This” also in black. Finally I cut a speech balloon from “A Pocket Full” set out of brayered pink cardstock and stamped words in black ink.

Tweet Wishes
Posted: June 30, 2014 Filed under: CAS, Tweet Wishes, Watercolour | Tags: Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer Watercolour pencils, Fabriano Watercolour Paper, Penny Black stamps 8 CommentsIt has been a while since I pulled out my watercolour pencils so it was fun to colour a simple outline image today. I stamped the branch from ‘Tweet Wishes’ in Versafine Onyx Black ink then painted the image using a waterbrush to pick up colour from my watercolour pencils. I splattered a little colour around and painted a rough border of blue. To finish it off I added some natural cotton lace and a narrow blue ribbon.
Thank you very much for your kind comments about my daughter and her prom dress. We were both very pleased with how it turned out and very touched by your lovely words. It has now turned rather hot here so it was wonderful to spend yesterday relaxing with friends by a lake where there was a breeze and of course the water to keep us cool. I’ll be back tomorrow with a brand new One Layer Simplicity Challenge.

Lookin’ Good
Posted: May 20, 2014 Filed under: Above Par, Watercolour | Tags: Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer Watercolour pencils, Fabriano Watercolour Paper, Penny Black stamps 2 CommentsTo colour this little golfer I stamped first in Memento Desert Sand ink to give myself a pale outline I could easily paint over. I then picked up colour from my watercolour pencils with a waterbrush and painted the golfer, the greens and the sky. I added a few little details with a 0.05mm fine line marker before I matted the panel in green and added a sentiment.
There will be inspiration for masculine cards all week on the Penny Black blog. (Make sure you check yesterday’s post; Cathy’s Potting Shed card is superb) If you are like me you probably don’t make enough masculine cards; I really need to build up my supply. This one won’t work for me as my Dad does not play golf; my husband doesn’t either so my children won’t be needing to grab it. They can get creative themselves for Father’s Day in Canada; I have until September to create something for Father’s Day in Australia.
Supplies:
Stamps: Above Par, …Lost Without You (PB)
Inks: Memento Desert Sand,(Tsukineko) Black Soot Distress ink ( Ranger) Prismacolour Fine Line Marker
Pencils: Albrecht Durer Watercolour pencils (Faber Castell)

Four Tulips
Posted: May 14, 2014 Filed under: Blooming Garden, CAS, Watercolour | Tags: CAS, Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer Watercolour pencils, Fabriano Watercolour Paper, Penny Black stamps, Tsukineko Memento inks 4 Comments
The tulip festival continues in Ottawa and here on my blog. I pulled out all my PB tulip stamps and have them on my desk waiting for inspiration. I can’t promise I will use them all during the festival but I will have a few more for you.
To create this little scene I stamped the tulips from the transparent set Blooming Garden twice in Memento Angel Pink. I then painted the petals with colour from a couple of watercolour pencils (listed below). I inked some of the detail lines on the stamp with a Memento Rose Bud marker and stamped over the painted petals to finish off the flower heads before painting the stems in green. I used the same green to fill in the lower background and a blue watercolour pencil for the sky. I then dabbed some pink watercolour ‘paint’ into both the green and the blue to suggest more tulips in the background.
The taped edge of the panel framed the picture which I popped up on dimensional tape over a strip of ribbon.
Supplies:
Stamps: Blooming Garden, Special Wishes (PB)
Inks: Memento Angel Pink, Northern Pine , Rose Bud marker (Tsukineko)
Cardstock: Fabriano 100% cotton hot pressed watercolour paper, Neenah Classic Crest Natural White 110lb smooth
Also: Albrecht Durer watercolour pencils True Blue 148, Pink Madder Lake, 129, Pine Green 267 (Faber-Castell)
Two Tulips
Posted: May 11, 2014 Filed under: CAS, Dainty | Tags: CAS, Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer Watercolour pencils, Penny Black creative dies, Penny Black stamps, Tsukineko Memento inks 8 CommentsWhen I set out to make this card I had two things in mind. I wanted tulips to mark the beginning of the Tulip Festival here in Ottawa and I wanted to use the current sketch at CAS(E) this sketch. I did not plan to make it one layer at all; the sketch really looks like at least a two layer to me. I made a stencil in masking paper (removable grocery sticker paper) with the new tulip die from Penny Black. It’s called ‘Dainty’ and I can see myself reaching for it often. I stuck the mask down and painted with a waterbrush picking up colour from watercolour pencils. I did not lay down too much ‘paint’ or water; the card base is not watercolour paper so I didn’t want it to warp or soak through to the back.
My daughter came along at this point and commented on my ‘floating tulip’. It did need grounding; I just hadn’t worked out a method at that point. Anyway, I left it as I had promised to take my daughter shopping for a dress to wear to her Academic Dinner on Thursday. We arrived at the mall at 4:30 clueless that it was going to close at 5:00! First store, second dress, happy girl, thankful mother.
I came back to my card, masked and sponged a frame around it then looked for a suitable sentiment. My plan was to stamp the sentiment in green so it would double as some grass but none of my green inks matched the leaves. I was about to settle for less than the best green when the it occurred to me that a dark blue might work. It did.
And the card just happens to also work for the One Layer Simplicity challenge, Fabulous Flowers.
