Mid winter sky

The sky has been very pretty around dusk lately, not the deep colours in today’s card but a soft apricot glow on the horizon along with yellows, pinks and blues. I used Colorburst powders to create this sky and the shadows between the snow banks. First I positioned a torn post-it mask across the watercolour panel and stamped the ‘into the sky’ branches over the mask. I removed the mask and repositioned it lower down and stamped some more branches on the right then finally placed the mask even further down the panel and stamped the tips of the branches on the left, all in versafine black ink.
Once the ink was dry I painted the sky in the top portion of the panel making sure I kept the paint above the bottoms of the branches. I tilted the panel to let the pinks and blues mix into patterns and new shades. I did the same behind the remaining branches but did not paint right up to the top of the snow bank above.
I mixed the paint powders in a palette and added platinum liquid metal for a little shimmer and sparkle. I hope the beauty around you inspires you today.

Snow tipped twigs

I have another brusho sky to share today. On Monday I explained how sometimes I paint the sky first, other times the images are done first. To create the appearance of snow on these twigs I had to stamp the twigs first. I used the misti and stamped the ‘into the sky’ stamp in versamark first then moved the watercolour panel up ever so slightly and stamped the twigs again in versafine onyx black. I then embossed with clear powder so the images would resist the paint when I added the sky over the top.
I used three colours of brusho to create the gradated sky leaving a bit of white at the bottom like a cloud. I finished the card by adding a simple sentiment and popping it up on a white card base.

Twinkling twigs

When I saw this ‘Into the Sky‘ stamp, I immediately thought of an inspiration pic I had found a while back. It just so happens that my first use of this stamp does not have the twigs reaching into the sky but quite the opposite.
I pulled out one of my panels splattered with masking fluid then stamped the twig stamp multiple times in weathered wood and stormy sky stains. To turn the stamped images into soft background I painted water over the stamping which softened both the twig image and the colour. Next I painted worn lipstick, weathered wood and stormy sky stain over the whole panel keeping bottom left corner light and graduating to darker colour in the opposite corner. Once that dried I stamped ‘into the sky’ again in Versafine onyx black and smokey gray inks so I would have some sharp foreground images over the blurred background twigs. I knew I would have some bright white dots when I removed the masking fluid but I wanted some light dots on the tips of the twigs also to look like water drops. To create those dots I used a paintbrush to add little drops of water at the end of twigs; I let the water sit and absorb some stain colour for a minute then dabbed with a paper towel.
I finished it off with some splatters of platinum liquid metal to add sparkle here and there. I wasn’t sure whether I wanted a sentiment or not but I looked through a stack of options and decided the tiny miracles phrase worked, both the words and the shape of the stamp.

You have probably already caught up with the fact that Penny Black has two new collections of stamps and dies. When I first receive new stamps my head fills with ideas and designs to try and this time was no exception. I had a little pile of bookmark sized watercolour paper strips on my table so I decided to try some of my ideas on mini projects rather than full sized panels. That way I was able to play with a few stamps and several ideas in a short space of time. The strips I worked on have become the cards I’m sharing today and tomorrow. I have also had a chance to develop some of the designs into full sized panels. On the strip above I used an old favourite, the little tree stamp from the ‘Prancers’ set as background for the new birch trunk stamps.
I stamped the two trunks from the new ‘Nature’s silhouettes’ transparent set on watercolour paper already covered in spots of masking fluid. I masked the trunks with post-its while I stamped the fir tree in the background then painted colour at the top and bottom of the panel with a combination of brusho and distress markers. I added some shadow and twigs to the trunks to make them look more tree like.
On my second mini panel I masked a moon with masking tape then used distress stains to paint a blue and green sky over the splatters of masking fluid. I turned this into a little scene by adding the ‘Into the Sky’ stamp in blue and black ink. I love this delicate stamp of branches and decided to stamp it on both the bases for today’s cards. It mimics the twiggy branches on the birch trees above and continues some of the upward reaching branches in the panel below.
