Masking Fluid Resist tutorial
Posted: June 13, 2012 Filed under: Breezy, Penny Black, Tutorial | Tags: Tutorial 29 CommentsThe card above was created using the Masking Fluid Resist method and the Penny Black stamp Breezy. A tutorial outlining the method is featured on Splitcoast Stampers today. Below is the video version of the tutorial, the first video tutorial I have ever done. I almost didn’t make it as the first few attempts were not good. I persevered and my clever 11 year-old son did all the editing. Masking Fluid resist is a method I use for creating snowy scenes usually, but I couldn’t bring myself to create a snowy card in spring!
Round and round
Posted: June 12, 2012 Filed under: CAS, Penny Black, Round and Round 6 CommentsPenny Black is showcasing new 2012 summer stamps this week and next week and the medallion stamp above is from the set Round and Round.
Just as yesterday’s “vintage style” card was slightly out of character for me, I think this one is even more so. It is not often you see a primary coloured card or a geometric matted layout from me. But what can I say? Sometimes you just have to try something different. I stamped the medallion in black and embossed it then coloured with watercolour pencils. I added water with a paintbrush to some colours for extra vibrancy. The sentiment is also from Round and Round.
Tomorrow I have something new for you, a first for me, but definitely back in my usual spongy style!

Stamps: Round and Round (Penny Black)
Inks: Memento Danube Blue, Versafine Onyx Black (Tsukineko)

Lace and a butterfly
Posted: June 10, 2012 Filed under: CAS, Soft Wings 8 CommentsFor inspiration today I browsed through my Handmade Cards board on Pinterest. I have over 100 beautiful cards pinned and they feature a range of styles and techniques. The one I chose to CASE today is a gorgeous vintage style card by Cindy Lawrence. My colour scheme is similar to hers and so is the layout but I switched the technique slightly and the stamps.
To create a textured background I embossed the Floral Thread background stamp in clear on ivory cardstock. I then sponged over the embossing with Wheat Versamagic Chalk Ink and a little Memento Rhubarb Stalk.
The butterfly is stamped in Rhubarb on ivory, the letter back ground in Desert Sand and the sponging done in both colours. The edges of the butterfly panel and it’s mat are distressed. I found some vintage lace to put behind the butterfly and one burgandy button (which unfortunately looks dark brown in the photo!) to finish it off.
Supplies:
Stamps: Floral Thread, Soft Wings 40-099, Letter Background, Lace Delight (PB)
Inks: Memento Rhubarb Stalk & Desert Sand, Wheat Versamagic Chalk ink and Versamark (Tsukineko)
Also: Clear embossing powder, vintage lace and a button
Bamboo & moonlight
Posted: June 5, 2012 Filed under: Bamboo Branch, CAS, Penny Black 17 CommentsOne layer cards are being featured on the Penny Black blog today so I was more than happy to prepare one.
My one layer cards usually involve masking and this one is no exception. I masked the right hand side and the moon with post-it notes then sponged the colour on lightest to darkest green adding a few bamboo branches in each shade of green. After removing the masks I stamped the bamboo and sentiment in black.
Have a great day and thanks for dropping by.

A posy saved from the discard pile
Posted: June 3, 2012 Filed under: Penny Black, Posies 19 CommentsHow often do you make a card only to mess it up when you add the sentiment? Maybe it only happens to me! Too many times I have just about finished only to smudge, double stamp or badly position the sentiment.
When I made panel on the card above the sentiment was just above the lower right corner and it did not look good! I tried restamping it on an oval which I matted with a scalloped oval but that didn’t work with the rest of the panel. The best option seemed to slice the offending sentiment right out of there. ( I realised after that placing a strip over the top would have achieved the same result.)
The posies panel was created by embossing in white then sponging in rhubarb stalk ink. I inked the letter background stamp in rhubarb and added that to the background along with a tiny bit of danube blue sponging. The sentiment that saved the day is from Free Flight and is much larger than the original messed up one. I completed the card on layered mats of white and red.
Enjoy your day and thanks for dropping in here.

A favourite masking layout
Posted: June 1, 2012 Filed under: CAS, Dreamy, Penny Black 5 CommentsThe Penny Black blog ends its technique week with cards featuring masking. I decided to use one of the layouts I often turn to, a masked and sponged vertical panel with a feature image extending beyond the masking. Here are a few other cards I have created using this layout Balloons, Delicate florals & Winter Sky. To create this card I sponged the sky first taking care to get lighter towards the bottom so that I could position a torn mask over most of the sky and sponge a hill in brown.
Make sure you visit the Penny Black Blog to see a range of cards using different masking techniques.

Back in black
Posted: May 31, 2012 Filed under: Paisley, Penny Black 9 CommentsI am back with another embossed paisley card. I loved the effect when I embossed in white so I decided to try in black. The paisley image is just as impressive in black. This card was very straight forward to make; I embossed in black embossing powder on white cardstock and then sponged in three colours before matting in black and popping the panel up on a black card base.
For more heat embossing ideas pop over to the Penny Black blog and see the lovely cards the other designers have created.

Watercolour butterflies
Posted: May 29, 2012 Filed under: Delicate Florals, Free Flight, Penny Black 13 CommentsThe Penny Black blog is featuring watercoloured cards today and once again the designers have come up with a diverse selection of styles. My card features watercoloured butterflies. I began by stamping the three butterflies in pale blue. I then applied all the wing colour with watercolour pencils and blended it with water. Next I embossed in gold over the top of the colouring and added a sponged, stamped and watercoloured background with some paint dropped here and there in the colours of the butterflies.

Black and White plus 1 colour.
Posted: May 24, 2012 Filed under: CAS, Hillflowers, Penny Black 12 CommentsToday the designers at Penny Black have b&w cards to share, each with a different accent colour. I chose this lovely silhouette stamp, Hillflowers, and masked a narrow mask with post-it notes around the edge of my white panel. I then sponged a gradation background with Memento Lilac Posies ink. The daisies were added before the masks were removed and then panel was popped up to add a little something to a very clean and simple card.
Thanks for dropping by.

Lace flowers (and a winner)
Posted: May 23, 2012 Filed under: Lace Flower, OLW, Penny Black 3 CommentsI pulled out the Lace Flower stamp and the Floral Thread background stamp again because they work so beautifully together. I am not sure what my colour inspiration was but it is possible a wedding could have a purple colour scheme with yellow flowers I guess?
I stamped the Floral Thread background first on a large panel and then added sponging in Memento Lilac Posies and Dandelion. I then stamped the Lace flower several times on the panel in Versafine Onyx Black. To create the tiles I cut the panel into 1¾” squares and then fiddled around with their positions until I was happy with the arrangement. The sentiment is half of the Blessings stamp I used on my last wedding card.
One Layer Wednesday News
Thank you to everyone who left comments or participated in my first challenge. I was thrilled to look at all the different Mini Masterpieces and now have plenty of inspiration for more of my own. I did click and visit everyones’ submissions but a couple of your blogs would not let me leave a comment-sorry about that.
As promised I have a winner randomly chosen from the cardmakers who took up the challenge. Congratulations to Carol Lucas who made a cleverly framed Mini Masterpiece that had me wondering how she had managed it with only one layer. Carol, I will be in touch to get your address so that you can receive your Soft Wings and Music Background stamps from Penny Black.
The fun continues on Cheryl’s blog this week with her “Something Sweet” challenge.
