13 year-old boy

I gave my almost thirteen year-old girl the task of making a card for a thirteen year-old friend with whom we celebrated on Sunday. It was hard coming up with an appropriate gift let alone a card. My stamp collection does not have much in the way of “boy stamps”. Miss A rose to the occasion and did a hand drawn card. It is not obvious in the photo but the “13” is cut out and popped up. She used Whisper White cardstock and Bold Bright markers.
She created another clever card for a 13 year-old girl which I will post next time.

Inspired by…

I decided I would try and use up some cuttlebug embossed scraps I had lying around in place of the designer paper panel. I like the colour contrast of the Teal and Moss mattes below but think there might be a bit too much white.
When I looked at the Handsome Hunter embossed swirls I wasn’t particularly inspired. The only thing I could think of to use it with was some gold for a Christmas card. So that means I have ONE Christmas card done! Sticking those little half gold pearls on was a little frustrating and I almost left it with just three, but that did not look right so I persevered.
The last one is my favourite with the crisp contrast of black, white and Brocade Blue. I love the classy textile cuttlebug folder.

A rather late Fathers’ Day post

My children did indeed make great cards for their father on Fathers’ Day, but I didn’t get them up here. We could just consider them very early for Fathers’ Day in Australia, after all their father is Australian!
Once again everyone took a different route when making their card. Remember my eight year-old son made me a huge Mothers’ Day card because he couldn’t be bothered going downstairs for cardstock? Well this time when I reminded him about Fathers’ Day he was downstairs near the cardstock so he picked up the already folded piece of blue cardstock on the table and drew computer inspired card you see above.
Our 12 year-old daughter printed a photo out on vellum which features my husband a few years ago when we were visiting his brother and trying a strange motorised scooter thing! The classic style on the right was made by our 14 year- old daughter who printed out her own sentiment. I never think of doing that, but it makes sense, then I can say absolutely anything on my cards!

Sunlit Woods

In case you hadn’t noticed I like creating scenes with trees! I have combined three different tree stamps from three different sets to make this sunlit woodland scene.
I started by stamping the tree from Branching Out in Basic Black ink. I then stamped the row of trees from Lovely as a Tree in the background using Always Artichoke and Mellow Moss. I actually stamped them several times without reinking to give the appearance of trees in the distance. When I did this I masked with a post it note so I didn’t get the bases of the trees.
It is hard to see in the picture but I added leaves to the foreground trees in Mellow Moss, Always Artichoke, Basic Black and Summer Sun. (You can click on the photo for a larger image) I then began sponging in the same greens and yellow to create the sunlight. To create the grass in the foreground I used the tree stamp from Nature Silhouettes and a post it note to mask the tree out.

Remakes

Once in a while a remake of a movie is better than the first one, but I usually prefer the original. As far as these cards are concerned, I definitely prefer the remakes. I went through a box of old cards the other day, sorting and tossing out what I didn’t like and wouldn’t use. I guess I could have photographed the originals but I just ripped bits and pieces off and started again. For both cards I just salvaged the flower panels which were stamped in Basic Black and coloured with watercolour pencils. I was inspired by the cards I saw on Simplicity by SusanRaihala.
The simple fonts in the one line greetings combined with the matted coloured flowers are a big improvement on my first efforts trust me.

Bonjour, baby boy

Friends of mine have a beautiful new baby boy at their house so I pulled out the cute little feet from one of the first stamp sets I ever bought. The feet are stamped with Versamagic chalk ink and embossed in clear. After that I just matted and layered a few co-ordinating colours and added a bow. Simple but sweet enough for a new baby, I think.

Inspired by the beach

When I got the big “Inspired by Nature” stamps I knew I would be making “landscape” cards with them. I love making scenes like this but they do take a little more time and sometimes do not work at all! This scene reminds me of walking from the parking lot to the beach as a child. The sand was darker or dirtier near the parking lot and often we couldn’t even see the beach. We would cart our surf mats and towels through the gap in the sand dunes and there would be the surf! I showed my Canadian born son a picture of some sand dunes yesterday on an Australian calendar and he asked,” What are sand dunes?” I see there is a whole section of his education being neglected!!
I started with the grass for this card. I inked the stamp with versamark and Old Olive and then added some Always Artichoke with a marker to create two-tone grass. I then embossed in clear. Next I tore a hillside edge into a piece of paper to create a mask which I used to sponge in the sandy hill. I sponged So Saffron first and then Certainly Celery and Old Olive. I used the brayer at the base with Really Rust on it. To do the sky I sponged in both Tempting Turquoise and Brocade Blue. The picture is matted in Marigold Morning and mounted on textured Old Olive with an Old Olive ribbon strip and antique brass buckle.

Featured stamper scene

I had a chance to be inspired by the talented ROX, who was Splitcoast’s Featured Stamper on Sunday. I chose her card here. I did change quite a few things in the end but my inspiration was definitely her silhouetted garden across the base of the picture. I stamped and embossed the tree in the corner and the plants along the bottom before doing the background. I chose to use a brayer and sponges to do my background rather than a background stamp. I then added more plants in Perfect Plum and Eggplant and a touch of silver embossing and cord.

Vintage Blue

Although I love lace and the vintage look, I don’t often make vintage themed cards. I was inspired by a card I saw with an embossed, then sponged background. I used the Textile cuttlebug folder and sponged lightly over the top. I stamped my flower and my sentiment then cut them out. The oval was cut using the CM oval cutters and the tag with the ticket corner punch and a little trimming. I wanted the same thread on the tag as is in the lace so I unraveled some of the lace to get enough thread to tie a little bow.

Simple grasses

I have found so many inspiring cards made with this set. The inspiration for mine came from a beautiful card I found at Splitcoast by Jane Mercer. There is not much to mine as you can see. I stamped the grass in Always Artichoke and then used markers to ink up a single flower on the flower stamp. After matting the picture panel in Artichoke I wanted something more down the side but not ribbon. If I had had the right buttons they might have worked but the simple cursive script of this sentiment seemed to be the right thing.
And without realizing it I have made a card which works for Sharon’s Spring challenge this week, thanks for the nudge, Julie!
