Buttons & Bows

I opened the Less is More blog this morning to see this week’s theme and found the challenge is to use ribbons and/or buttons.  I don’t think I have ever used a button on a card but I have a selection of ribbon types and colours so I started thinking.  When I went down to my craft table however, I saw a little blue button sitting there and decided to try and incorporate it into my design. I found a very narrow piece of ivory ribbon which I managed to get threaded and tied through the button’s holes.

So the tiny little button and ribbon set the colour scheme for the card.  I cut a square mask into a post-it note and used sponging in Not quite Navy to define the square before stamping the three Pocket Silhouette stamps.

Supplies:

Stamps:  Pocket Silhouettes, Short & Sweet
Inks: Basic Black, Old Olive, Not quite Navy
Cardstock: Flourishes Classic Ivory
Also: a button, a bow and a glue dot

OLW 59 Inspiration challenge

I enjoy playing along with the One Layer Wednesday challenge when I can which hasn’t been lately.  This week Susan provided a pretty photo of flowers in jars to inspire us.  I decided to use the colours and the flowers but not mention the jars.

The technique is nothing new for me; same old masking and sponging that I love to do.  I sponged a hint of a hill this time not the well defined slopes I sometimes have.  I also sponged a hint of sunrise by leaving a little white space unsponged.  The white flowers were embossed in clear before the sponging and everything else was stamped over the top of the sponging.

Supplies:

Stamps:  Pocket Silhouettes, Short & Sweet
Inks: Yoyo Yellow, Certainly Celery, Always Artichoke, Versamark
Cardstock: Flourishes Classic White
Also: Clear e.p.

OLW35: Yellow

This was a stretch for me to pull out the yellow ink at this time of year but Susan’s One Layer Wednesday Challenge at Simplicity this week is to use yellow.    I used my favourite SU yellow, Summer Sun, along with Pumpkin Pie and Ruby Red to sponge inside my squares. Then I removed the mask before stamping the plants in black.  Although it was hard to create such a colour scheme while it is snowing outside I am happy with the results.  Thanks for the challenge, Susan.

Check out the other cards featuring yellow; there is plenty of inspiration to be found.  I was definitely inspired to create mine after seeing Kathy’s beautiful card.

Supplies:

Stamps:  Pocket Silhouettes
Inks: Basic Black, Pumpkin Pie, Ruby Red, Summer Sun
Cardstock: Flourishes Classic White

Warm Sky Thankyou

I don’t know that I have ever seen a sky quite this colour but I am sure it is possible.   This was somewhat experimental but I am very happy with the way it turned out.  I stamped the flower from Of the Earth and the grass from Pocket Silhouettes in versamark to create my field of flowers then embossed in clear.   I used a brayer and Apricot Appeal for the sky, Certainly Celery for a little ground and then Pumpkin Pie around the edges.

I was inspired by this pretty  card created by Jennifer McGuire.

Supplies:

Stamps: Of the Earth. Pocket Silhouettes, Thank You Kindly
Inks: Versamark, Chocolate Chip. Pumpkin Pie, Certainly Celery, Apricot Appeal
Cardstock: Confetti White, Whisper White
Also: Clear e.p., Brayer

Andy Warhol inspired

The title should really read ” Andy Warhol and Lateblossom inspired!  A few days ago Susan at Simplicity by Lateblossom  issued a  challenge to search through our stamp collections and try making a Andy Warhol inspired card along the same lines as her two cards here and here.

IMG_8313card5

I was pretty certain that the only images I had that would work were  flowers and snowflakes.  Susan had already made a striking snowflake card so I tried flowers and then realized I might have enough leaves to try again.  The flowers are stamped on Whisper White and the leaves on Confetti Cream.

Featured stamper scene

IMG_7719card63

I had a chance to be inspired by the talented ROX, who was  Splitcoast’s Featured Stamper on Sunday.  I chose her card here.  I did change quite a few things in the end but my inspiration was definitely her silhouetted garden across the base of the picture.  I stamped and embossed the tree in the corner and the plants along the bottom before doing the background.  I chose to use a brayer and sponges to do my background rather than a background stamp.  I then added more plants in Perfect Plum and Eggplant and a  touch of silver embossing and cord.

Supplies:

Stamps:  Pocket Silhouettes, Nature Silhouettes
Inks: Bashful Blue,  Brocade Blue, Pale Plum, Perfect Plum, Elegant Eggplant, Versamark
Cardstock: Whisper white, Perfect Plum, Brushed Silver, Basic Black
Also: Silver cord, Black and silver embossing powder

Add a ribbon tab

img_7448card44

Over at No Time to Stamp this week Sharon’s Stamp Simply challenge is to use a ribbon tab.  Rather that a knot or a bow, which is the way I usually add ribbon, I had to add  a folded tab of ribbon instead.  Although the colours on this photo are not quite true I love the way the camera picked up the sheen on my navy satin ribbon tab.

I started this card with five strips of Very vanilla cardstock, just left overs out of the scrap drawer.  I used the brayer to roll Mellow Moss onto a couple of pieces, Always Artichoke onto another, Not quite Navy on a fourth and then a combination of those colours on the fifth.  I then used the same colours to stamp the leafy stamp from Pocket Silhouettes onto the strips.  When I had finished them I stuck them on a piece of Night of Navy cardstock with the spaces in between.  At this stage the piece was quite big and I decided that some stitching would add to the design so I threaded up my machine with a co-ordinating thread and began to sew around the outside of the rectangle.  My machine did not like it at all.  I cut off the edges I had sewn and did some more trials, on a scrap of cardstock this time, but no luck.  I decided to check whether the machine was working with fabric, which it was but not with cardstock, so I gave the stitching idea.

My central image of a tree was  stamped  with versamark and Night of Navy then embossed with clear before I sponged Mellow Moss and Not quite Navy diagonally across the piece and then added the sentiment.  After cutting the unsuccessful sewing off my background piece it was the right width but not longer the  right height so I added a strip at the bottom sponged with Mellow Moss and Not quite Navy again and stamped with the tree leaves.  I’d still like to master sewing on my cards but not at the risk of damaging my sewing machine, so I’ll be doing a little research.  If you have any tips let me know.

Supplies:

Stamps: Thoughts and Prayers, Pocket Silhouettes
Inks: Versamark, Mellow Moss, Not quite Navy, Always Artichoke,Night of Navy
Cardstock: Very Vanilla,Night of Navy
Also:  Clear e.p. Navy satin ribbon

Branch Out – Summer

img_7370card37

I am making a set of cards for a friend, which I will first show at a workshop, using the designer paper from the Sale-a-bration catalog.  This blue paper is so bright and pretty, like a summer sky, that I decided to make it the background for this summertime scene.  I didn’t emboss this time just started with a chocolate chip tree, added lots of celery leaves, a swing and a few butterflies.

To make the little friend to friend tab I stamped the sentiment and then punched it out with one side of  a square punch (and the matte with a larger sqaure punch), which was much easier than trying to cut it evenly with my big cutter.

This is such a cute stamp set, but I need to play around a bit so I can come up with some different layouts and ways of using the tree.

Supplies:

Stamps: Branch Out, Pocket Silhouettes
Inks:  Ballet Blue, Certainly Celery, Chocolate Chip, Basic Black
Cardstock: Whisper White, Certainly Celery, Delicate Dots d.p.

Story-book window & tutorial

img_7303card31

I have finally completed a card tutorial!  I had hoped to do one for a snowscape, but the seasons are changing and I have more of a spring scene  instead.  I used some of the same techniques to do this scene as I used for my snowscapes.  The inspiration for this card came from the cover of a children’s novel The Dragonfly Pool by Eva Ibbotson

First I cut a piece of scrap card to be a mask for my hillside.  I kept both pieces so I could mask the sky and the hills at different times.  Of course you don’t need the huge piece I have, I’m not sure why I went so large?

img_7264storybook1

I started with the sky, holding the mask in place while I sponged with both Bashful Blue and Ballet Blue.

img_7265sb2

To do the hills I swapped masks and sponged down the left hand side and across the bottom with Garden Green.

img_7268sb3

I then moved the mask a little to make the edge of a hillside and sponged with more Garden Green and some Certainly Celery.

img_7269sb4

img_7270sb5

On the right hand side of the hills I sponged with  Summer Sun which I blended into Certainly Celery to create a lighter hillside.

img_7271sb6

img_7272sb7

With all the background sponging done I began to stamp the  silhouettes along the bottom of the card.  I used Basic Black,  stamping some of the stamps upside down to use just the stems as grass.   Where the flower stems were a little short I lengthened them with a black marker.  I used two stamps from Garden Silhouettes to frame the picture in foliage.

img_7277sb9

Around the outside of the scene I embossed a silver border using an embossing marker and ruler to make a line down each edge.

img_7278sb10

I added a little flourish to each corner with versamark and the large flourish stamp from Baroque Motifs.

img_7280sb11

Rather than pouring embossing powder over the whole image I dipped the edges into silver e.p. one at at time and then did the corners.

img_7282sb12

I stamped the dragonfly in black and  coloured the wings with an embossing pen before embossing them in silver.

img_7288sb14

To make the sentiment I sponged a rectangle of Whisper White cardstock in Garden Green and Certainly Celery, then stamped the words in Basic Black and matted in black.( the photo didn’t turn out, sorry)    I attached silver cord to both ends, wrapped it around the back of the cardstock and taped it. I also added the tiny butterflies from the Branch Out set.

img_7292sb15

As I was mounting the card on black I needed a white panel inside, so I sponged a bit in both greens and made the silver edges and flourishes using the same method described above.

img_7295sb16

I hope my instructions make sense, the method is fairly straight forward so have fun if you try it.  Thanks for dropping in and reading this far!  Have a great weekend.

Muted Silhouettes

img_7124card191

Here is another card I made using the To the Nines Specialty D.P.  The overall effect is quite muted as I stamped the images on Sahara Sand rather than a lighter brighter colour.  The images from Pocket Silhouettes are perfect to punch out; I rarely use the whole image.  I didn’t photograph the inside this time as I just matted a piece of Whisper white in Sahara Sand and attached that.

Not much to it really.

Thanks for dropping in, and thank you for the encouraging comments you have been leaving, I really appreciate them.
