Double sponging tutorial

On Wednesday I posted a card featuring a little square filled with a butterfly and some music. Today I have a tutorial showing the technique on a new card with a bigger image panel.
First I sponged three colours randomly over a piece of white cardstock. Careful blending is not important because the sponging will be stamped over and responged.
I stamped the music background over the stamping in a darker colour.
It’s hard to see but next I embossed the butterfly in clear embossing powder.
The final step is to sponge over the whole panel in a dark colour and watch the butterfly emerge.

OLW 88 Mini Masterpiece

I am thrilled to join Susan, Jennifer and Cheryl in presenting what has always been a favourite challenge of mine. In honour of my first week hosting this challenge the kind folk at Penny Black are letting me offer a prize to one of the challenge participants. Next Wednesday after OLW 88 is closed I will pick a random winner from all who linked to their challenge entries to win the Butterfly-Soft Wings and Music Background stamps featured in my card.
The challenge this week is to keep it small; you’re going to create a mini masterpiece. Your stamped image area has to be no larger than 2″ by 2″. You can add a sentiment outside that if you like. You can choose one stamp or a few stamps or mask off a 2″x2″ area like me if you like, just keep it within the limits.
OLW88 Rules
1. A one-layer card is defined as a single piece of card stock folded in half. NO other layers allowed.
2. Make your card a mini masterpiece by keeping your image within a 2″x2″ area.
3. Upload your creation somewhere on the Internet, and then link to it using the InLinkz button at the bottom of this post. I know the links work a little differently on my blog; please don’t let that put you off, just click the link to see what others have created and then upload your own! Please make sure to link directly to the card and not just to your blog so people will be able to find it easily!
4. The most important rule of all, of course, is to HAVE FUN!!!!!
Thinking of You

The Penny Black blog is featuring sympathy cards today. I chose a colour scheme I don’t usually use to create my card, but I am quite happy with the warmth of brown and coral together. The floral sprays and sentiment are stamped in Versafine Onyx Black and the letter background in Memento Desert Sand . I coloured the flowers with Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils.

A Fabulous Day

It’s a one layer challenge at Less is More this week to use exactly three stamps: no more,no less.
I have used the girl and purse from “Hello Gorgeous” and a slightly altered sentiment from Sweet Wishes. I covered part of the word “birthday” with a post it note so that I could wish someone a fabulous day!
The green and blue panel is sponged with Memento New Sprout and Bahama Blue, Then stamped the images in Versafine Onyx Black. The girl’s outfit is coloured with Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils.

Wedding blessings

There are wedding cards to view on the Penny Black blog today. Both just happen to feature the new background stamp Floral Thread. It is tricky to see it on my card but I stamped Floral Thread in versamark and embossed in clear making a subtle lacy background. The coloured panel also features lace as I used Lace Flower stamped several times to border two sides of the panel. I think white on white is perfect for a wedding card but my floral panel needed a mat so I sponged a partially white/partially plum border mat and popped it up on the base.

Birthday Butterflies

There are birthday cards to enjoy on the Penny Black Blog today. I made one in a summery yellow colour scheme featuring the one of the butterflies from the new Free Flight set. The challenge at Less is More this week is Yellow so this one fits the bill.
I used one of my favourite layouts and techniques. This layout is scattered throughout my blog. I masked with post-it notes and then embossed the butterflies in clear before sponging in yellow. I added a few butterflies in yellow, then sponged in a pale orange, more butterflies, some text and then removed the masks. To finish off I added a two tone butterfly and a two tone sentiment.

Watercolour florals and an exciting Sunday
Posted: May 7, 2012 Filed under: Flowers Sweet, Penny Black 8 CommentsI received a delightful surprise when I opened my email yesterday and saw that I had been chosen as the “Featured Stamper” on Splitcoast Stampers. I had a quick browse through the CASEs of my cards which stampers had already put in the gallery, but had to head out for most of the day. Straight after church our family drove down town to enjoy the 30th Anniversary Concert of the Ottawa Youth Orchestra, which my daughter plays in. After the concert I was able to catch up on all the other cards which had been added to the gallery during the day. I found it intriguing which cards people chose to CASE. My gallery has over 300 cards in it and some stampers found inspiration from very early creations I had almost forgotten I’d made. There were a few favourites too which popped up several times.
Thank you to those of you who participated by CASing cards from my gallery; I felt very honoured and touched by the lovely comments.
I will not leave you without a card. This is one I made for my daughter’s violin teacher who lost a dear friend and fellow musician to a brain tumour recently. The inspiration for the card came from a beautiful (and more complex) card by Julia Stainton.
I definitely wanted the watercolour effect so I used Fabriano hot pressed watercolour paper and wet it completely with a sponge before stamping the flowers and leaves from the transparent set, Flowers Sweet. Some flowers were stamped more than once in gradually darker colours, sometimes dampening the paper in between impressions so the ink would continue to blend. I used the Memento dye inks from Tsukineko which bleed and blend beautifully on damp watercolour paper. I finished if off with the music background, sentiment from Gratitude and some sponging around the edges before splitting the panel, matting it in Penny Black’s Mix & Match Grand Canyon paper and attaching to an ivory card base.

Graffiti Wall

The new releases continue on the Penny Black blog today with the brick background and the floral frame. Check out the blog to see the some lovely creations featuring both new stamps. My card is a little different to the others featured as I created a card for a boy ie. no flowers or pastel colours, even the word ‘cutest’ has been crossed out! The words are all from the new set, Words Express.
I stamped and embossed all the words first, then sponged and finally added the brick wall. I think I may indulge in graffiti again; I quite enjoyed it!

When time is of the essence

But I also wanted to participate in a couple of challenges. The One Layer Wednesday challenge returned yesterday and as some of you noticed Cheryl and I have joined Susan and Jennifer on the hosting team. Thank you to those of you who have left me such kind messages expressing your excitement over the challenge and my involvement; I am really looking forward to it. So I really couldn’t miss the first challenge with the new team. The other challenge that appealed this week is the Less is More challenge because that sketch had my name all over it!
I have managed to create a card for to enter in both those challenges but more importantly a card I can send my mother for Mothers’ Day. As my mother lives on the other side of the world I really need to think ahead and the truth is, I rarely do. My parents read this blog so I don’t like to post their cards here on the blog before they have received them but this will have to be an exception. (Perhaps, Dad, you could just not show her this one!)
The OLW challenge is to make a card for a woman in your life. I have used my mother’s favourite colours and a stamp with a little postage/correspondence theme happening. My mother has been a faithful correspondent since I left home, I less so. It looks like I made a clever collage of script and postmark, butterflies and birdcage but no, I just used the clever collage stamp from the new Penny Black Free Flight set. (To see more cards made with this set and the rest of the set visit the Penny Black blog today.) Of course I masked and sponged first but you already know that about me don’t you? The Less is More challenge was a sketch with either a centered square or circle leaving plenty of white space all around.
