Hand painted floral wreath
Posted: May 11, 2020 Filed under: Hand painted | Tags: Fabriano Watercolour Paper, sennelier watercolours 31 CommentsIt is a constant resolve of mine to do more painting. I love painting with stamped images but I want to improve my painting without stamps too. I spent some free time recently painting this little wreath for a friend’s birthday. I worked on Fabriano cold pressed watercolour paper (100% cotton 140lb) and used Sennelier watercolour paints. As usual I kept my palette of colours limited concentrating on the same red, blue, purple, grey and mustard paints to get different hues and tones. I began by tracing a circle with a light brown watercolour pencil knowing that I would cover most of it up and it would dilute and disappear as I painted over it.
I started by painting the large flowers then moved on to the smaller ones and leaves. I kept adding little leaves or buds thinking the circle was unbalanced but eventually had to tell myself to stop. The decision about whether to stamp, hand letter or die cut some words is still unresolved. What to do you think?
So beautiful!
I wouldn’t add a thing to detract from this beautiful wreath, Heather. Perfect as is!
This is absolutely gorgeous Heather, and I actually thought it was a stamp until I read your post. The restricted palette of four colours is perfect, and love all the different shapes of the flowers and some pretty leaves in between too. x
Just lovely as usual Heather, also I feel a sense of calm and peacefulness looking at it.
You do both so well there is no way to tell. If I had 1/4 of your wstercolour talent I probably would not use too many stamps. Thank you for inspiring us!
Very pretty. Wish I could just sit down and paint, but I need a stamp first, then can color it in or water paint it. Yours is beautiful.
No……. leave well along and frame it! It is stunningly beautiful x.
So beautiful! I will have to continue to use stamps for my art but thankful for that!
You’re talented! The flowers are lovely and the limited number of colours ties everything together so nicely. I wouldn’t add a thing. A greeting inside the card is enough. Or frame it and put your greeting on the back of the frame. Lovely.
Stunning work! I think any kind of greeting would look great with it!
WOW! Just WOW! If only I could paint like that! This is so delicate looking and I could look at it all day, those soft colors. I would not add a sentiment to detract from that incredible artwork. I love it as it is! Very few people can do something like this. Thanks for sharing your talent!
I love it Heather!
Your talent came out brilliantly.
Your painting is so beautiful! I’d choose to keep it this way and to be framed.
Beautiful spring wreath!
Beautiful
Your wreath is so beautiful! you have great control of your brush and a knack for a gentle image. I’m so jealous! I am just beginning to use watercolors on my cards but of course I use the stamped image. One day I hope to do a pain ting just using color and a brush. Thank you for sharing this lovely image.
Love this. I also would like to paint more without stamps. I do some everyday. It’s constant practice. Ann Gorgone
Simply gorgeous, absolutely delightful. If you do add a sentiment then I would suggest hand written or a stamp using your watercolour techinque so that it doesn’t distract from the softness of the painting.
Hello Heather,
What a lovely painting, if it were me, I would do hand lettering for the greeting. It would look
gorgeous with the hand painting. I hope this helps.
Gayle
It’s so lovely. You painted that beautifully.
A sentiment in a curly script font would be nice. But really, any of the options could work depending on what you have in stock.
Love the wreath!
This is absolutely gorgeous Heather. What a beautiful wreath. If I could paint like this I wouldn’t add anything to detract from it’s perfection. Greeting inside.
Oh, Heather, your work is Amazing and Gorgeous and just gets better and better! Thank you for posting your works of Art! They always bring a smile to the heart and day!♥
So delicately done. I love the roses, especially, and the very light airiness of the wreath overall. If anything in the middle, hand painted, a greeting or perhaps a heart, with the same delicate touch. Lovely. Thank you for sharing.
To me its beauty is enhanced by the fact that you posted this on Mothers Day
As it’s for a friend’s birthday, I think hand painting the greeting in one of the main, darker colours would look good.
I do love all your work.
Thank you.
It is beautiful just as it is
I had become a little tired of wreaths when yours popped up and its beauty immediately appealed to me. It is probably safest to stamp a lovely message…it would be a shame to mix the hand painting with a diecut in my mind.
Absolutely beautiful Heather. I wouldn’t add a thing. Your recipient will want to frame this. Put the sentiment inside.
Heather-I’m a card making fan from Syracuse, NY. My husband and I love Canada and Ottawa is our favorite city, one we visit often. I’ve been following you for years and was moved to respond by the beauty of your wreath. It’s prettier than any stamped image I’ve seen. Thank you for sharing your ideas and creations. Your work inspires me. Stay well. Kris Neagle
[…] few weeks ago I posted a floral wreath I’d painted and asked your opinion on adding a sentiment. In the end I didn’t risk stamping or writing […]
