Limberlost card

Limberlost card Heather Telford

Earlier in the week I posted my art journal page inspired by ‘A Girl of the Limberlost‘.  After completing the page I wanted to create a card with a similar feel. When I created my first book inspired journal page (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe) I created the card first then expanded the scene into a double page. This time I am working the other way round.

I created the butterflies the same way as shown on the video but directly on the watercolour panel. I used gold embossing powder and changed the colour palette for the wings. I stamped the butterflies again on label paper and cut them out to make masks to protect the painted butterflies while I stamped and coloured the background foliage. This panel was my colouring for day#3 of Kathy Racoosin’s 30 day colouring challenge.

I used the large leafy outline stamp, Wondrous, inked with forest moss distress stain to fill the background with leaves then painted forest moss stain in and around the leaves. I painted extra layers around the edges of the butterflies to lift them a little. When that all dried I stamped on of the new ‘time’ stamps and spritzed it so it would bleed into the background. To finish the background I splattered some dark brown stain and some water.

The panel was already quite large so I decided not to mat it in a co-ordinating colour. Instead I chose to string some beads on a gold thread and attach that down the side of the card. Thank you for all your generous comments this week. I am thrilled you enjoy what I share here and always love to hear from you. I was very interested to read that several of you enjoyed ‘A Girl of the Limberlost” as much as I did.

Your card is gorgeous and totally rocks the Limberlost ‘vibe’. That book (and its prequel “Freckles”) was on my yearly reading list and I was tickled to see you mention it on your Art Journal post). This card definitely evokes the dappled light through the leaves that I would imagine in my mind’s eye as I read. I’m so glad you shared this card…I’ll be reading several GSP books this weekend 🙂

As much as I like your Limberlost journaling page I like this card even more! The background is simply incredible, would love to see a video of how you created it. Actually would love to be a fly on the wall of your studio to watch how you create all of your awesome artworks!

This latest line of work is fabulous. i’m REALLY enjoying them. I
need to get a copy of the book and read it soon. Wow, all of the details you add and it doesn’t ever seem to be too much. You tip toe right up to the line and stop. lol. Amazing. I avoided mixed media so long because it looked messy to me. My feelings about it are really changing quickly. I had shelves put up around the tops of the walls in my studio and I am now working on creating things to go up on the shelves to inspire me. My organizational ideas are good, but they had driven the room to look a little too industrial for me. I’m retaking the room, lol and i’m not afraid to go clear up to the ceiling to do it. I really want to thank you again for inspiring me in so many ways. Hugs, treen

Wow! I love your work and have been “lurking” on your site for a while now. This card just shouted out to me. I haven’t done b-flies in gold and am certainly going to now! I mainly use distress products and am going to try a similar background. I also work at our local library and will be looking for the Limberlost book next time as I’m not familiar with it. Keep sharing your beautiful work and inspiring me!
