Poppy Painting

More bister, this time in combination with color burst powder and zig clean color real brush pens. This panel of poppies was almost tossed because at one point it looked a mess. I stamped two poppies using a pink zig pen to ink the stamp. I filled the outline in using both the pen and some pink colour burst powder. I also painted the stems in green but it all looked a bit dull and I wasn’t sure how to add interest. I decided to lose some of the definition by spritzing the whole thing with water. The poppies bled in all directions and it really wasn’t an improvement at all! I set it aside and worked on something else while it dried. When I came back to it I decided to add another partial poppy as well as the bud and seed head. I painted loose leaf shapes and added green and blue bister powder around the bottom and top of the panel. To sharpen the poppy images a little I painted darker colours below the edges and added the veins back in.
Those poppies keep finding their way onto my cards; I don’t know how it happens…

Cardstock: Fabriano cold pressed watercolour paper
Also: Zig clean color real brush markers

Gosh–I can’t imagine throwing this away. It’s gorgeous. You’re extremely clever to have added just the right touches to get to this finished product. I have so many times thought, “My project needs…something”. And added something, only to be totally disappointed. Everything you’ve done looks intentional and well thought out.
Couldn’t have a better subject IMHO! This is lovely. Was interested to read that you combined the zig w/c pens and the bister (I have brushos). What a marvelous finale when you added in fine detailing and the blends of colors are just so very lovely. Well done! Been missing visits, but will try to get back again more frequently, as your cards are always so inspiring! TFS
The colour of these poppies is stunning Heather and the way it evolved shows that one should never give up on a piece as you have proved that there are quite often ways to fix something you don’t like. x

This is superb. I love the way poppies bleed into background.
Looking at your work with bister + red/orange + poppies are simply encouraging, I always love red/orange and your way of watercolouring and either with tulip and poppy. I am trying bister too after you first introduced it to the blog and it’s just so loose to control, and i thought its just my lack of skill. Reading your blog kind of gives me a motivation, and i totally understood how it felt like it’s almost getting out of the hand but of course you always can turn great poppies to look that amazing.
