Snow Storm

This little scene ended up being considerably snowier than I first thought it would be, hence the title. I double embossed the branches using the method shown here. Extra embossing powder stuck on and around the masking fluid droplets creating the appearance of very fine snow over most of the panel. The moon and snow banks were masked after the embossing using post it note masks. I did all the sponging with one colour, Memento Paris Dusk, and knew when I had finished that I needed some red somewhere to add a little contrast. I played around with adding a little red bird but seriously, what bird would be out in the snow at night during a storm? The answer was to add the sentiment in red. After messing it up on the panel I restamped and punched the sentiment out with a tag punch and totally covered my mistake.
To finish the card I tried several positions for the panel. To position it up the top or at the bottom meant leaving a large empty white space. I don’t usually mind doing that but neither up nor down looked balanced. In the middle looked better especially with a little texture above and below the panel.

Wow! What an unbelievably beautiful example of masking and sponging! What a gorgeous scene! I’ll be bookmarking this one to remind myself of how lovely this technique can be so I’ll get down to business and practice it. I’ve always loved the look of this technique and have bought all the supplies, but then I never get down to business and do it. Whoever is lucky enough to receive this card should definitely frame it!
Hi Heather, I’m a follower of yours and really enjoy your scenes. Where do you find post it notes that big or do you use several to cover the area? Also how do you get such a smooth curve, do you draw it or cut it out free hand. Have you ever thought of doing videos for us that have a hard time picturing what you are saying. I don’t know if there is anyone else there that would love seeing it done. I guess I learn much better from the visual aspect. I buy post-it notes from Staples which are wide enough for a 5.5″ panel or card. I usually cut the hill masks free hand but sometimes draw them first to make sure I get the dips and rises in the right place. I have several videos and quite a few photo tutorials also. When I “gasp” and struggle to find the words to tell you how stunningly gorgeous your card is, I need to think about following your instruction. I have the very same ink and some similar branch stamps, so I have no excuse. It may take me a few tries, but if I even came kinda close to your creation, it would be so worth it. Thanks for sharing and giving me a snow scene to love (so not looking forward to seeing it here in real life).
