Winter Berries

The Penny Black blog is posting Designer Spotlights all this week and today is my day. I thought this card summed up some of my favourite techniques and preferences. I often make one layer cards and love to use sponging and masking; this card is an example of all those things along with my favourite image to stamp, a tree. To make this card I stamped the tree twice, first in versamark and then in both versamark and colour applied with markers. The coloured image was stamped a tiny bit lower than the first image and then I embossed it all in clear embossing powder. Next I positioned a mask to separate snow and sky and sponged the sky in Memento Bahama Blue. I used several hill masks to sponge snow drifts then stamped the three slim tree trunks for a shadow.
This post is up a bit late because I arrived back from PEI last night around midnight after 17 hours on the bus! Thank you to all of you who wished my daughter well in the National Track and Field Championships; she had a great time and came home with a gold and a silver medal as well as a personal best time in her hurdle race. When I have had time to catch my breath I will have some photos to share. I thought Prince Edward Island was beautiful and, although I didn’t fit in much sight seeing, I did go to the beach for a short while everyday and swam in the Atlantic Ocean.

Question on the double stamping — do you use the markers over the versamark on the stamp?� If so, doesn’t the versamark make the marker tips get funky?

Hi Heather! 🙂 I love your blog and check it regularly for inspiration (thank you). I have found that stampin up white cardstock is not v. good for one layer cards such as this one. I was just wondering have you discovered a fab white cardstock for one layer cards such as this one?

Wow, another stunner! I love how you’ve used the whole of the card area for this image, yet it’s still so clean and simple. And I love the depth you’ve achieved with the sponging. Congrats to your daughter, great achievement.
Heather, your sponging techniques are so AWESOME! I’m trying very hard to learn to do this, also to get a similar effect with copic airbrushing. You never fail to amaze me. Never. It’s always a surprise when you have a new post. This card took my breath away. The way you shaded your sponging, the way you eased off any sponging to the right side of the card to give the sentiment its own space, the “icy” look of your tree, the bright berries, the tree’s shadow, all came together to make this just absolutely stunning. You can almost feel this bright winter day, with the new-fallen snow. Hats off to you, Heather; you are simply amazing.

Heather, a question on how you sponge your ‘snow’? Do you achieve this look with just the blue shading, or are you using any ‘white’ stamping ink to get some white for the snow? I’m guessing you start with white card stock, use the blue, but would love to see a video – IF you have the time…showing how you do this. It’s so effective and especially on this most recent card. I’ve seen it on some of your others also…it’s beautiful, and I’d like to try it!!! Thanks so much
