Cape Wickham Lighthouse

Recently I posted a card featuring a bridge in Oregon and asked if anyone knew or had visited the bridge. It was lovely to hear from people who lived in Oregon or had visited. One person lived very near the bridge. I would love to hear from people who have seen today’s lighthouse, it is quite remote. This image is another Echidna Studios digital stamp and is special to me for several reasons.

The lighthouse is called the Cape Wickham Lighthouse and it is on King Island in Australia. My daughter created the digital design from a photo but it wasn’t one of her photos; she’s never been there. The reference photo is from a slide my dad took in 1963 when our family lived on King Island. I was born there and at age 2 had my photo taken in front of the lighthouse. So you see there is input from three generations of my family in this card!

I printed the digital image on hot pressed watercolour paper, masked the lighthouse with a few strips of painter’s tape then splattered masking fluid over the sky. I painted the sky with Sennelier watercolours and while it was still damp painted removed paint with a damp brush to create the beams of light. Once the sky was dry I removed the tape so I could add some shadow to the lighthouse and paint the grass and hut. I removed the masking fluid to reveal the stars once everything was dry. (now I’m not sure that the Cape Wickham light shines out both ways like that but I used artistic license).

Let me know if you have seen or heard of the Cape Wickham lighthouse; it is the tallest in the Southern Hemisphere!

Hi Heather, your card is lovely as always. I’ve never been to Australia but I think it is so cool that your daughter is drawing images from family history! She is very talented as well. I’ve never used a digital stamp. Do you print it with an ink jet? I would think the ink would run when water coloring, no? I just ordered a laser printer with a manual feed slot. It’s coming Monday and I’m hoping that will work to print a digital stamp. Maybe a mini tutorial on the basics of digital stamping would help some of get over the unknown about digits and get us on the bandwagon. 😊

Hi Paula, thank you for your kind words. I am really enjoying working with my daughter’s images. I love her style and yes, she is talented.
I haven’t used an inkjet print for the images but I do use a laser printer and the manual feed. We are planning a mini tutorial so hopefully we’ll have that out soon. Thanks for your encouragement 😊

How interesting that you lived in such a remote place with only 1600 residents and truly an island, a good way from Tasmania and Victoria, mainland Australia Heather. I have looked it up and it is about twice as long as the Isle of Wight off the south coast of England, and about the same width, and the IOW has 140,000 residents! Sorry, I find this so fascinating, and also when I saw your beautiful depiction of your daughters wonderful digi image, it did look massively tall, and it is at around 48 metres, so no wonder it is the tallest lighthouse in the Southern Hemisphere. I do love the nighttime sky with the light beaming out..so atmospheric. x

You are not alone in your interest about coastal islands. I am always interested in books and shows or videos featuring life on small remote islands. The IOW does have a lot more residents!

It’s a wonderful image…just love the starkness of it. And your family’s connection is so interesting. I too was wishing I knew how to use digital “stamps” and will be looking forward to the mini-tutorial. I finally bought a back-feeding printer so I could put watercolor paper through it but it is inkjet so I may be out of luck equipment wise.

Thank you for your kind words; it is lovely to have an image from my birthplace to work with. We don’t have an inkjet printer but are going to try printing some of the Echidna Studios images on a friend’s printer so I will let you know what we find out.
