Snowflakes-2 ways
Posted: January 7, 2011 Filed under: CAS, Snowflakes 13 CommentsSnowflakes 2 ways sounds a little like a restaurant dish. I did not set out to make two snowflake cards it just happened. I spent a large chunk of time creating the tiles on the card above. They were hard to photograph but you can see the effect above and in the close up below.
The process in making the tiles was:
- stamp snowflakes in versamark on white card
- emboss snowflakes in clear
- sponge around snowflakes randomly with three blue inks
- punch squares out containing the three snowflakes
- press versamark pad onto punched squares
- emboss with glassy glaze
- repeat 5 & 6 until you are happy with the glassy surface.
Once the tiles were completed I played around with the card base for a while before I was happy. My initial plan was to put them on a plain white card but there was too much white so I tried adding a snowflake and sponging to the card base and then lay the tiles on that but it didn’t look right either. (It became the base for the second card below). When I placed a white panel on a navy card base it looked balanced.
I didn’t want the sponged card base to go to waste so I made three more sponged squares without any glassy embossing and popped them up. My daughter, whose camera I am using, had to help me with her camera’s settings and had the bright idea of taking the side view closeups. I like them better than the front views!

OLW 34 Boot Camp
Posted: December 30, 2010 Filed under: CAS, Snowflakes 9 CommentsOne Layer Wednesday is back again. This week Jennifer has sent us back to boot camp; we are limited to one image stamp and one sentiment stamp and a maximum of two inks. I had to double check that I had followed the rules as versamark is not actually a colour. I really did go back to basics in choosing this stamp and ink colour which were the first I bought from Stampin’ Up all those years ago.
I used a couple of post-it notes to mask the top and bottom of the card base and then not so randomly stamped the snowflake in versamark. I embossed with clear and then sponged in Not quite navy. After removing the bottom post it note I stamped some snowflakes in Not quite navy, re-stamping some without re-inking to get the lighter shade.
Supplies:
Stamps: Snowflakes, Short and Sweet
Inks: Versamark, Not quite navy
Cardstock: Flourishes Classic White

Watermarked Snowflake
Posted: November 17, 2010 Filed under: CAS, Snowflakes 5 CommentsThis snowflake is from the now retired SU set “Snowflakes”; the first set I ever bought. I have parted with various sets over the years but I think I will always hold onto this one. I remember after moving to Canada the excitement in seeing snowflakes falling that were clearly 6-pointed shapes. It isn’t always obvious but occasionally they will fall on your coat or mitt and you can see the intricate design for just a moment before it dissolves.
To create this card I masked off the panel I wanted to colour then stamped the snowflake in versamark and embossed in clear. The sponging was all done in Brocade blue fading off into nothing on the right hand side. I then dropped water on the area I had stamped and sponged . What I didn’t realize until I removed the masks was that the water would seep under the post-it note masks. I don’t think it matters too much. I searched through my Christmas sentiments until I found one which was whimsical enough to match with the fluid style of the card.
Thanks for dropping by.
Supplies:
Stamps: Snowflakes, Many Merry Messages
Inks: Versamark, Brocade Blue

Double sponged snowflakes
Posted: October 23, 2010 Filed under: Snowflakes 1 CommentHere is the second attempt at a double sponged card. The method is exactly the same as the previous leaf card but the colours do not contrast as well with this one. I did use several blues to do my first application of sponging but it isn’t obvious.
Enjoy your weekend; it is cold but gorgeous here it Ottawa!
Supplies:
Stamps: Snowflakes
Inks: Versamark, Night of Navy, Brocade Blue, Bashful Blue, Almost Amethyst
Cardstock: Whisper White, Night of Navy, Brocade Blue

OLW 24 Back to Base-ics
Posted: October 17, 2010 Filed under: CAS, Snowflakes 4 CommentsJennifer Styles has stepped in to help Susan from Simplicity with her One Layer Wednesday challenges. This time we had to make a holiday card with a coloured base, but not white, cream, red or green. I chose Pacific Point but the colour in the photo is not quite true to life.
My card is as simple as they come. Stamped in versamark, embossed in clear. None of my Christmas sentiments were quite the right size and script so the greeting will be inside only.
Thanks Jennifer for lending a hand and providing the inspiration.

Stamps: Snowflakes
Inks: Versamark
Cardstock: Pacific Point

OLW 23 Heavy Metal
Posted: October 11, 2010 Filed under: CAS, Snowflakes 9 CommentsI used a tried and true layout for Susan’s One Layer Wednesday challenge this week. We had to use metal somewhere on the card so I opted for metallic embossing powder. I know snowflakes are not really silver but in my magical sky with northern lights I wanted silver snowflakes. Lately I have been using this layout with sponging but decided to use watercolour this time. A couple of post-it notes are not quite enough of a barrier for water and ink on watercolour paper so my edges are a little more “relaxed”; there are a few breakouts of ink here and there. I decided to stick with them as that is what watercolour tends to do. The watercolour paper dictated the size of the card so it is 3.5″x5″.
After masking with the post-it notes I embossed the snowflakes then wet the whole panel and applied colour with ink and markers, moving it around with aqua painters until I was happy with the design.
Even though I have lived in Canada for 10 years now I have yet to see the Northern lights; this design came straight out of my imagination.
Supplies:
Stamps: Snowflakes, Short and Sweet
Inks: Versamark, Night of Navy, Marina Mist, Not quite Navy
Cardstock: Fabriano Hot pressed watercolour paper
Also: Silver e.p. aqua painter
OLW 15 Unexpected Colours
Posted: August 17, 2010 Filed under: CAS, Snowflakes 1 CommentSusan’s latest One Layer Wednesday challenge is to use an unexpected color scheme for a card. It doesn’t get much more unexpected than making pink snowflake Christmas cards. I didn’t really want to make pink Christmas cards, it just didn’t sit right with me! But I persevered and think I might even know who I’ll give these pink cards to. My camera didn’t really pick it up but both cards are embossed with iridescent ice e.p. for a little snowy sparkle.
Supplies:
Stamps: Snowflakes
Inks: Versamark, Pink Passion, White Craft
Cardstock: Whisper white, Pink Passion

Still winter
Posted: January 9, 2009 Filed under: Lovely as a Tree, Snowflakes, Stamp Simply challenges, Stamped Landscapes 2 CommentsMy children are big Narnia fans, so when I saw Sharon’s challenge this week I thought of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe where in Narnia it is “always winter, but never Christmas”. So although, we may use the same stamps we used at Christmas, the challenge is to make a card that says “Winter” It is very much “still winter” here and we had a snowstorm this week to prove it.

For my card I decided to continue playing with the snowy landscape idea, once again using Lovely as a Tree. I punched a small moon out of a post it note and tore a strip of paper to mask my snow at the bottom. I sponged in all the sky first using summer sun, apricot appeal and pumpkin pie. Then I stamped the background trees in grey with the mask still in place. I then swapped the mask over and covered the sponged sky and lightly stamped the trees upside down to try and make a shadow. It didn’t work that well so I sponged more shadow in grey. Finally I stamped two black trees and a greeting.
It’s nice to be stamping again. Thanks for stopping by.
Supplies:
Stamps: Lovely as a Tree, Snowflakes
Inks: Summer Sun, Apricot Appeal, Pumpkin Pie, Going Gray
Cardstock: Whisper White, Apricot Appeal, Going Grey, Basic Black
Keeping it simple
Posted: November 5, 2008 Filed under: Best Yet, Snowflakes 1 CommentLast time I posted I mentioned that I had a little challenge for myself. As I homeschool my three children I rarely find time for anything but lessons, preparation and marking during the week. Add to that the meals, washing etc and you have an idea of my schedule. I decided that this week I would try to make a simple card each night, one that was finished in less than 30 minutes. Well, I didn’t get to it Monday, but Tuesday night I did, and it was completed in a fairly short time.
I will probably use this one for a Christmas card making night I am organizing for ladies at my church. I began by embossing a few snowflakes in clear e.p. Then I sponged over them with Bashful Blue, Ballet Blue and Almost Amethyst. Lastly I stamped some more snowflakes using the same inks. The ribbon is blue organza.
Supplies:
Stamps: Snowflakes, Best Yet
Inks: Versamark, Bashful Blue, Ballet Blue, Almost Amethyst
Cardstock: Whisper white, Ballet Blue
Also: Clear e.p., Blue organza ribbon
