50th Wedding Anniversary

My parents are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this weekend in Canberra with family and friends.  Sadly my family will not be there but we managed to get a parcel together containing cards and other handmade items.  It reached them a few days ago so now I can post the card I made.

It was quite a departure for me to make a card like this after making so many one layer cards lately.  I embossed the poppies in gold, coloured with SU ink and an aqua painter, then sponged the pale blue background.  It is not really visible (perhaps my new camera might have captured it better??) but I also embossed poppies in white around the left-hand and bottom edge of the large white panel.

When I was speaking to my mother yesterday she mentioned the card my dad made her.  After she described it to me I asked if they could perhaps send me a picture so I could display it on the blog.  My dad printed a photo from before they were married, added a sentence on the front and wrote a poem for the inside.  I think it is superb.

Red poppies

Considering the large dump of snow we received today, poppies are certainly not a seasonal thing to be stamping but I pulled them out and made a couple of cards anyway.  I decided to use a watercolour technique to colour inside as I love the look of watercoloured poppies and hope to paint a larger watercolour of red poppies one day that is good enough to frame.  For now I will settle for a card sized image.  I stamped with versamark and embossed with black and then used my aqua painter to pick up colour from the stamp pad lid and colour in the poppies.  The aqua painter is such a cool tool.  When I think of all the blender pens I went through before I bought an aqua painter…if only I had tried one earlier.  The only issue I have is that the brush tip ends are comparatively large so if I want a very small amount of water I will reach for a fine paintbrush.  I also added some colours with marker and blended it in with the aqua painter.

My initial image was bigger with whole poppies in it but I preferred the cropped look .  I considered just popping up the poppy panel with no mattes but after trying red and black decided that it actually looked best with both mattes.

I hope you are surviving the winter storms if you are in my part of the world.  It has been a strange day for us as we have watched our own weather as well as checking updates about the cyclone hitting Queensland today.  My husband grew up in that area, so we listened and watched with interest as people talked about their preparations and fears about what was coming.  Now the pictures are appearing of the damage done which is just as extensive as people thought it would be.

Watercolored poppies

As I have been having fun doing some watercolor painting lately,  I was keen to try some of the techniques with stamps.  I love watercolor paintings  of poppies so the beautiful Flourishes poppy stamps were the perfect place to start.

Getting the effect I was after took some trial and error.  The Stampin Up inks dry  very  quickly so I could not stamp them and then use an Aqua Painter to spread and blend the ink.  I found that the best technique was to stamp,  then “paint” some ink into the leaves and flowers and then mist the whole image with water in order to get the inks to blend and run a little more.   I did this several times before I was happy with the results.   The leaves are stamped in Always Artichoke but I used Garden Green ink along with the Artichoke when painting.  The images are stamped onto watercolor paper.

Supplies:

Stamps:  Poppy Patch (Flourishes), Short and Sweet
Inks:   Real Red, Pumpkin Pie, Always Artichoke Garden Green, Basic Black
Cardstock:   Acquarello Watercolor Paper, Real Red, Always Artichoke, Flourishes Classic Ivory Cardstock
Also:  Artichoke grosgrain  ribbon

Popping poppies

Ever since I got this beautiful poppy set I have been planning to stamp it in a single colour.   Red seemed an obvious choice.  I arranged my poppies across the white rectangle and then matted them but felt that I wanted something more, but only a little something.  I decided to emboss the poppies on the background white in white embossing powder, a technique I saw on this beautiful card made by Jak Heath.  I’m afraid I have not been able to capture the effect very well with my camera, but trust me, there are white poppies embossed at the top and bottom of the card!  I added a bit of that sweet gingham ribbon and that was it,  a simpler and faster treatment for the poppy patch stamps.

Thanks for dropping in.

Golden poppies

I spent some more time playing with Poppy Patch and watercolour pencils recently.  I actually started a while ago but never spent long on the colouring, just picked up where I left off when I had the chance.  I realise the arrangement of the poppies is not that different from the last poppy card, but I have used a square this time with the poppies overflowing on either side.

Although it might look like I did a bit of masking for this card I did not.  I stamped two poppies and a bud directly on the white square and then stamped the other poppies on a separate piece of white, cut them out and then arranged them overlapping the others.   My sky is sponged Bashful Blue.

Thanks for dropping in,  I hope you are enjoying the sunshine where you are,  it has shone here every day this week and the snow is gone!

I love these poppies!

This is my first stamp set from Flourishes, a birthday gift from my daughter.   I haven’t quite worked out an efficient way to clean the clear stamps so if you have any hints for me please leave a comment.  I realized when I was colouring these poppies that I haven’t used outline stamps in a long while, so I haven’t used my watercolour pencils in a while either.  You would know, if you visit here regularly that I have been stamping a lot of silhouettes.  Well, that might change, with these poppies and the new Sweet Peas from Flourishes also, when I get hold of them!

I began by stamping the poppies in Basic Black and colouring with watercolour pencils and a blender pen.  I then sponged a Bashful Blue background around the poppies.    I stamped one poppy and cut it out ready to overlap  some of the others and decided to let it overlap a little of the oval where I stamped the sentiment.   I chose gingham ribbon because poppies seem to be carefree and casual flowers to me.  Not like the formal roses who might demand  satin or velvet ribbon, the poppies are happy with gingham!  There is a challenge on the Flourishes blog this week to  use ribbon on your card, so this is my entry, not a very adventurous use or ribbon, I know but ribbon all the same.
