One Layer Simplicity

Have you visited the new One-Layer Simplicity blog? What once was One Layer Wednesday is now One-Layer Simplicity and has its very own blog where  each month you will find a new challenge dreamed up by one of the design team. The challenge will appear on the first of the month and you will have until the 24th to add your challenge entry. The first challenge hosted by Susan is to restock the shelves with whatever card you are short of.

I am short on birthday cards so I stamped these daisies in Smokey Gray versafine ink and coloured them with Faber-Castell polychromos pencils. I masked with post-its first to create two margins then used coloured the images and added a pale grey shadow around them and at the edge of the masks.

Go and check out all the entries for inspiration plus.

Supplies:

Stamps: Wishes, Flower Festival (Penny Black)
Inks:  Versafine Smokey Gray (Tsukineko)
Also: Faber-Castell Artist Polychromos Colour Pencils

It has its own home so you can pop it in your reader, subscribe to receive it by email or bookmark it. It is now a monthly challenge which will appear on the first day of each month and stay open until the 24th of the month. For the last few days of each month the design team members will highlight some details they enjoyed from the entries received.

So head over there now and start planning your first one layer card of 2014 so you can enter it in Susan’s kick off challenge

#1. Restocking the Shelves

I will be back over the next few days with a card or two. I hope your year is off to a great start.

OLW 167 Just add water

OLW167 watermarked

This week’s One Layer Wednesday challenge is to add water to your design some how. I chose to spritz the stamp before printing and also to flick droplets of water onto the panel.

I masked the top of the card front so I could brayer a blue base of Memento summer sky ink. I then stamped some snowflakes in the same summer sky ink; the effect is so subtle you probably can’t see it! Before stamping the snowflakes again in Memento Paris Dusk I spritzed them with water resulting in some of the smudgy images. I then added the small snowflakes and sentiments and strategically placed some water droplets to look like they fell there by chance. I sponged the edges with Paris Dusk before removing the mask.

Sorry I was not able to leave comments last month on all the submissions; there was too much going on in my life. I look forward to your submissions this month. Have fun splashing that water around!

OLW 167 Rules

1. A one-layer card is defined as a single layer of card stock folded in half. No other layers of paper allowed.

2. Make a card using water somehow in the design or process. It could be spritzing, droplets or watercolour painting.

3. Post your card somewhere online and link back to it here using the InLinkz button on the sidebar. If linking to a blog post, please be sure to link to the specific post and not your blog’s home page.

4. The most important rule of all…HAVE FUN!

OLW 162 Leaves

OLW Leaves

As I write this post our backyard is beginning to fill up with leaves. The strange thing is that by the time this post goes live I will be far away from our autumn leaf filled yard in another season and country all together!

Wherever you are and whether you can see golden, red or green leaves the challenge this week is to feature them on your one layer card. I used one of the leaf dies from the Penny Black creative die set Leaves to cut a couple of masks from post it notes. I then sponged over the masks in warm fall colours and added a thankful sentiment.

Supplies:

Stamps: Hot Rod (PB)
Inks: Memento Dandelion, Potter’s Clay, Cantaloupe, Morocco  (Tsukineko)
Dies: Leaves

OLW 158 Fly away with me

Butterfly in brown

This week’s One Layer Wednesday challenge is to feature something with wings on your card. I chose this beautiful butterfly stamp and a palette of browns.

I masked the left hand side of the card front so I could sponge and stamp  the right hand side. I have roughly used the rule of thirds for my stamped panel. The butterfly is stamped over both sides directing the eye from left to right. I also added a little sponging to the bottom edge in keeping with the vintage feel of the card.

OLW 158 Rules

1. A one-layer card is defined as a single layer of card stock folded in half. No other layers of paper allowed.

2. Make a card with wings on it. It could feature birds, butterflies, planes, mosquitos ; anything with wings.

3. Post your card somewhere online and link back to it here using the InLinkz button on the sidebar. If linking to a blog post, please be sure to link to the specific post and not your blog’s home page.

4. The most important rule of all…HAVE FUN!

OLW 155 Silhouettes

birds on a wire

I’m not too late to add a card to Karen’s One Layer Wednesday challenge. I actually have two, neither of which turned out as I imagined but both meet the criteria.  I masked both cards with post-it notes leaving a one inch panel each time where I embossed the birds and sponged the sky.

On the card above I sponged over a torn mask repositioning and using different colours each time. On the card below I sponged over a straight edge then repositioned and sponged again several times to represent the sun’s rays.

One night I was sitting watching one of my son’s soccer games and there was quite a noise coming from nearby the field. When I looked to see what it was I saw hundreds of birds perched on electricity wires. It was an astounding sight.

OLW 154 One-One-One

OLW 154 One-One-One

This week’s One Layer Wednesday Challenge is to use one image stamp, one ink colour and one sentiment stamp to create your card. We might have done something a little like this before but I think it makes us think about keeping it simple which is one of our aims on this challenge.

I used a single flower stamp but masked a square first to limit how much of the stamp showed. My colour choice was grey which is a little unusual for a flower but I have seen some very striking grey images on cards lately so I thought I would give it a go.

OLW 154 Rules

1. A one-layer card is defined as a single layer of card stock folded in half. No other layers of paper allowed.

2. Make a card using only one image stamp, one colour and one sentiment stamp

3. Post your card somewhere online and link back to it here using the InLinkz button on the sidebar. If linking to a blog post, please be sure to link to the specific post and not your blog’s home page.

4. The most important rule of all…HAVE FUN!
